On a larger scale, project Hail Mary seems to imply a dark forest Fermi paradox theory to me. Alien race releases Astrophage to spread across the galaxy. Based on brightness of the resulting Petrova line (or lack of) said aliens can then specifically target intelligent species (capable of turning the astrophage off) and send relativistic missiles to destroy the systems.

They didn’t change directions, they slowed down within their orbital path such that the vertical component of their force vector (relative to planet centric reference frame) was sufficient to counteract the gravity of the planet. Simultaneously their horizontal component was sufficient to garuntee the chain did not dangle into the thrust/fire/heat. Essentially hovering and translating. I can’t remember if they explain this in the book, but that means that in a relatively unloaded fuel state, the ship exceeds a thrust:weight of 1.0. Must not have been true at full fuel load as you would not have needed to build the Hail Mary in space.

I don’t understand how the fishing scene worked in hail Mary so they used the ship’s engines to basically perform a reentry burn in the upper atmosphere?

@dubsa98 The real plot hole is that due to the communications delay, the eridians would need to immediately send a relativistic missile (the exact same ship they already built, or the Hail Mary) to destroy earth. Otherwise earth would destroy them first.

Saw Project Hail Mary last night and the only thing I’ll say is that there’s one scene where Ryan Gosling’s character runs two samples in a fully unbalanced centrifuge. Someone needs to be fired for that

@united Just as a reminder, seats are 18” wide. So this “bed” is only 4’ 6” long. You can’t actually sleep on it unless you are on the shorter side. I think it’s a great option for kids however, so kudos to United for innovating on this!

It’s a double integration of acceleration in the frequency domain, in terms of the math. In normal speaking, the missile knows where it is because it knows the steps (directions and velocity changes) taken to get to that position relative to its starting positon (the ground). This is what “inertial guidance” is. Longer version: You can’t measure velocity/position without looking at things around you, but you can measure force (accelerometer in your phone knows to turn the screen sideways for example), since you know the mass of the missile, you can find its acceleration with this force. With acceleration and time, you know velocity, and with velocity and time, you know position.

Major plot hole/problem in Hail Mary. Giving the Eridians all scientific knowledge from earth means they would then have the ability to build autonomous astrophage powered craft. Given the 30+ year communications barrier with earth the only logical way to ensure Eridian long term survival would be to immediately construct and launch relativistic missiles at earth and destroy earth before earth destroys you as Earth is already ahead of you technologically. Hence, Ryland Grace is the destroyer of earth, not the saviour.

@GrantSlatton This exact scenario happened to me, but it was 6 cavities and $3000. They also charged me $47 without my consent (and had no coverage from insurance) to show me how to brush in circles on some model of a mouth. This is the link to the practice: maps.app.goo.gl/KHvstt16mNamAM…

insane that we tolerate living in a society where you can go see one dentist and he's like "ya u have 13 cavities, will be $4000 to fix them all" then see another and he's like "that guy was full of shit and trying to scam you, you're fine" ???

@PoeBrianL @uckema @eigenrobot True, this was where electricity was around USD$0.06/kwh including delivery/fees, hydroelectric. So that obviously preferred pricing was likely hidden in that cost.

@capn_sand @uckema @eigenrobot That’s cool that you got to tour a DAC test site. Wish I could. I don’t think DAC is viable for fuels or sequestration at needed scale but may be useful way to synthesize food, medicine, etc DAC consumes energy, so any energy stored in fuel would be less than input energy

really impressive thing about USN nuclear carriers is that they have desalination plants and carry trawling nets so that they can operate at sea basically indefinitely

I had a tour of a DAC a few years ago, they had some vials of fuel they had produced from carbon pulled from the air. It’s now turned into 1pointfive.com and they aren’t interested in the fuel production side anymore, but they told me $1.something a litre back then so I am assuming closer to $2/L now.

@capn_sand @uckema @eigenrobot Interesting, thanks. Have link by any chance? Costs for air to fuel will depend on energy costs overall, but still even at pre-war that’s lower than I’d expect but I’m not an expert in that I’m a chemist but more biochem than synthetic organic and fuels

@capn_sand @uckema @eigenrobot Thermodynamics though. It’s not just the bulk materials but also the energy stored within the chemical bonds in oil that is precious and hard to replace. Algae was capturing energy from sunlight, buried, squished, & cooked for millions of years into oil. pnas.org/content/112/31…

@uckema @eigenrobot You can make jet fuel, they just don’t. You can pull CO2 from the air and hydrogen from the water. It’s actually more economical than you might think. It’s actually something being worked on too.
