I started school in Newcastle in Year 5 without knowing a word of English. I was nine years old and had arrived as a refugee from Bosnia just a couple of months earlier. I was one of those strangers our politicians often speak about.

All the kids in the photo are under the rubble. These are the children of the Arafat family, whose home was bombed by the Israeli army in Gaza. They might still be alive, or they may have been killed. The Israeli army is tightening the siege on the area, preventing civil defense teams from reaching them to rescue those who might still be alive, nor to retrieve the bodies of the martyrs.
