I think we have really lost sight of the roots of socialist thought when people find it baffling that (some) socialists would be excited about the prospect of big technological advances that unsettle the established modes of production and want to focus on who owns the tech.

@mattyglesias @jbarro I played D1 football in college. I didn't play until I was in 7th grade. A high school classmate of mine, the same track, played in the NFL for a year. Puberty does something to muscle memory. There is nothing these kids learn pre seventh grade that makes a difference.

@jbarro The private teams have non-trivially crowded out school-based teams at early ages and the concern is you won’t be able to make a high school team unless you’ve been playing competitively younger.

NEWS ON THE BALLROOM -- The $1B for USSS is one of the most important things Republicans are dealing with right now.
It is the single provision that is standing in the way of ICE/CBP funding. Trump wants this on his desk by June 1. But that's all been complicated by the $1B for security, including Trump's ballroom.
Forget the House floor right now. it's irrelevant. all the action will begin when the Senate moves the reconciliation bill.
As @LauraEWeiss16 scooped last night, Senate is not only changing the $1B language, but they are also considering lowering the number from $1B.
Senate is engaged in a lot of Trump management right now. They know Trump wants the money but they also know that, in its current form, they cant pass it. The parliamentarian is a side show, for the most part. Because if the language ends up on the floor, it could easily come out during vote-a-rama.
And here's the real kicker: The House is even trickier. Absences and opposition will kill this provision in the House. Johnson has been warned by rank and file. This won't fly.

Accountability and opportunity must go hand in hand. Janeese Lewis George voted against giving DC a curfew tool to respond to youth gatherings that have, at times, erupted into violence. And when the Council had the opportunity to extend rec center hours, she shut it down, choosing politics over our youth.
As Mayor, I won’t tolerate this kind of disorder, and I’ll make sure our young people have safe, constructive places to go.
