First of all, TSA is NOT FUNDED BY TAXPAYERS! TSA's budget comes from the $11.20 security fee per RT or $5.60 security fee for one way tickets bought. As a matter of fact Congress takes $2.70 off each of those SECURITY FEEs to put into the general budget, so technically stealing money from workers whose equipment gets outdated, etc. Next - TSA Officers did NOT have to join the union. It was optional! They were still covered by the CBA, so unless they SAW the value, they didn't pay. As far as the Official time, I am HIGHLY disappointed that the administration I voted for were NOT informed about the above. In addition, in order to sell the story, they had to use optics. Try 200 Officers out of 45,000+ (that is .004) were on official time (F/T) to support over 437 Federalized Airports Nationwide and 45,000+ Officers who again, VOLUNTARILY paid union dues. so NO TAXPAYER money used, no MANDATORY Union Dues Paid, TSA could not strike, TSA could not bargain for pay or benefits. It was all about collaboration and working conditions (Seniority, how to bid, transfers, uniforms allowed, etc.) This was because the attrition rate cost TSA a lot of money in training. So it was a good mixture. Putting something out saying over 200 Officers were working on official time which is more officers than you have in 86% of the 437 Federalized airports leaving out (AT ANY ONE of the 86%) is why it didn't make sense.
WHY didn't whoever was in charge of this decision tell Secretary Noems this? Sabotage?
