I knew I was trans when I was 14 years old in 2001, in a small farm town with no peers to teach me anything about that stuff. I figured it out on my own. I'm 39 now. It doesn't matter if someone is a child or not, they deserve to be treated with dignity. If I was old enough to be tried as an adult before a jury of my peers in a court of law, then I sure as hell deserved to be treated as an adult by medical professionals and supportive peers.

I’m saddened to learn that a New Yorker in city custody died early this morning. He was transferred from Rikers Island to Elmhurst Hospital yesterday evening, where he was receiving medical attention.
My thoughts are with his family and loved ones as they endure this profound loss. Every person in our city’s care deserves dignity, safety, and access to quality medical treatment—without exception.
Transparency is essential and the Department of Correction and oversight partners have begun an investigation into the circumstances of his death.
