My cautious optimism has been - and continues to be - based on 1). Heat remains most aggressive suitor. 2). Several teams who could top a Heat offer either decided against it or were deterred by Giannis' unwillingness to sign longterm there. 3). Giannis strongly wanting Miami, and he has some influence on this process.... The reasons why nobody should be 'certain' this happens with Miami: 1). Celtics will always loom as threat because Giannis would be OK with that. 2). You can't predict the behavior of rich men. What if Bucks owners say, 'Heat offer is not good enough. [Bleep] everybody! We're keeping him!' 3). There's always the threat of mystery team, but with knowledge that a team wouldn't bid a ton without knowledge that Giannis would be willing to stay longterm. Nothing groundbreaking in this post, but that largely covers it.

As Mike Brown said last night, you need luck in sports. Here's where the Heat needs luck: For anyone who wants Giannis in Miami, you must hope that Portland/Milwaukee/Boston don't agree to a 3-team PURELY HYPOTHETICAL BUT LOGICAL trade that would easily trump any Miami offer and help all 3 teams. The Celtics, hypothetically, could acquire Antetokounmpo in a three-team trade by sending Brown to Portland, which — as a result of the 2023 Damian Lillard trade — has the right to swap first-round picks with Milwaukee in 2028 and 2030 while also owning the most and least favorable 2029 first of their own, Boston and Milwaukee. The Blazers could remove those protections and offer the Bucks a combination of young players (among Scoot Henderson, Donovan Clingan, Shaedon Sharpe and Toumani Camara) and some of their five tradeable first round picks, which includes Orlando’s unprotected 2028 first-round pick. Boston also could get one of those picks, besides landing Antetokounmpo. Heat would be helpless to prevent that, so Miami needs some luck.
