From what I can tell, there's not really clear evidence that ball players were sacrificed at all? Most of the evidence for the idea is just iconographic, IE murals showing beheadings at or near ball courts. Maybe there were sacrifice ceremonies at ballcourts, but that doesn't mean the victims were players. I had a bigger reply about this I made a few months ago but Twitter's search function sucks and I can't find it right now.
