@JeffreyGoldberg Jeffrey, does this mean that Reagan was selling weapons to a country with which we were at war? That sounds highly treasonous.

"The Islamic Republic’s decision to build its political identity around 'death to America' has been a 47-year war of choice. Trump’s decision to try to end Tehran’s malign capabilities, rather than merely contain or counter them like past administrations did, has also been a war of choice." -- @ksadjadpour: theatlantic.com/international/…

@mattyglesias Matt renews his war on old people, arguing for higher taxes and lower benefits (even though the benefits have been paid for) because he is not old. But one day he may be!

Dems have a lot of intra-mural arguments about flat universal benefits vs means-tested programs but Social Security (to maintain a pseudo-insurance structure) has a structure that's the opposite of means-testing where richer people get higher benefits.
Marc Goldwein@MarcGoldwein

🚨🚨🚨 This year, a couple retiring at the normal retirement age (~67) could collect $100,000 in Social Security benefits. 💰💵 Our new Six Figure Limit would cap benefits at that level. A short 🧵

EXCLUSIVE: Gavin Newsom promised to build a bridge for cougars and butterflies in the middle of Los Angeles. The project has turned into another boondoggle, with broken deadlines and costs exploding to $114 million. This is Newsom's bridge to nowhere. city-journal.org/article/califo…

The number of people I encounter who can’t explain their (generally “good”) jobs and/or what their spouses do is staggering. I’d love to see people try to describe what they actually do for a living in a single 280 character tweet in a way that the average person can understand.
Susannah Black Roberts@suzania

There’s like maybe a maximum of 8 jobs where I understand what the job is. Shopkeeper. Farmer. Teacher of some kind. Priest. Novelist. Journalist. Private detective. Chef. That’s it. What is a data engineer. I don’t know.

Charlie Kirk was a innocent soul. The left murdered him in cold blood and celebrated. Robert Mueller was a corrupt, evil person who died of natural causes. We aren't celebrating... it's a relief. We are not the same. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Trump approval is now below where he was in his first term. But views of Dems are worse than they were in 2018; definite need to try to come up with ways to do a "new look." natesilver.net/p/trump-approv…

@mattyglesias 1. a lot more Russian oil on the market 2. Iranians are letting some ships through 3. Advanced countries releasing oil from their stockpiles 4. Still, prices are almost 50% higher than in March '74 at the time of the first oil crisis. macrotrends.net/1369/crude-oil…

I continue to be a little puzzled oil isn’t higher — *precisely because* the economy is now more resilient to oil shocks than it was in the past, I would expect a supply disruption to cause a *larger* price spike because the demand still needs to be destroyed.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

@jasonfurman I do remember this and I’m really struggling to understand why today’s price impact is so small. Given what we know about the elasticity of demand, it seems like the real price should have to be very high to offset the lost supply.

something i've noticed is that people who are new to something — whether it's tailored clothing or catholicism — are often very rigid and dogmatic in their thinking. much more zealous than people who have been into it for a while. not sure what causes this.

Tillis never needs to face voters again; Murkowski can & does win elections against the opposition of the GOP base, & has even rigged her state election laws to help her do so. Whereas Collins needs the ME GOP voting base to stay in her corner.
Matthew Chapman@fawfulfan

Let me get this straight: Lisa Murkowski is a no, Thom Tillis is a no, but Susan Collins — the only Republican senator in America to represent a solid blue state — is a yes on Trump's MAGA grab bag of voting rights restrictions?

@CharlesPPierce "It wasn’t that long ago when the GOP wasn’t insane" I think we're going on about 45 years now. When Reagan ran on cutting taxes, increasing defense spending and cutting the deficit--that was the turning point.

Is the fundamental premise for military action--that Iran has been waging war against the U.S. for 47 years and it is time for the U.S. to strike back--a convincing argument for most Americans? Hostage crisis 47 years ago. Marine barracks 43 years ago. Embassy bombings 28 years ago. 9/11 25 years ago. Iraq IEDs 20 years ago. Each time, the president was responsible for retaliating. Presidents Reagan and Bush and Clinton and Bush and Obama and Trump I and Biden took various military actions but did not see fit to go to war with Iran based on that record. And *now* it is a sufficient reason for war? washingtonexaminer.com/daily-memo/449…
Mike L@mlock71738

@ByronYork While I agree he's not explaining it to people who do not understand anything and obviously do not watch the news or read anything. It's obvious that a terror machine that has existed for 47 years needs to be removed.

@loganb The federal income tax was originally designed to tax only people making more than $500,000 ($16 million adjusted for inflation). Was that slopulist nonsense? Of course, 1913 was a more enlightened time.

Porter, Booker, and the other electeds doing this slopulist nonsense are conceding two things: 1) they have no credible plans to lower costs in their high cost states 2) the public services provided aren’t worth what the taxpayers are paying Incredibly bleak. We have no party for state capacity.
Katie Porter@katieporterca

0% state income tax for California families making under $100,000. That’s thousands of dollars back in your pocket where it belongs. As Governor, I’ll work the issue at both ends—lowering taxes for those who are struggling and raising them on the biggest corporations that can afford to pay.
