@MaynardMar25163 @cfuchstv Great job Mariah! I like how you explained what sitcoms mean to Wanda herself, viewers, and then characters within the show. It's interesting to think about how sitcoms are understood as providing comfort, yet in the show they do the opposite. @cfuchstv #304F23

The consistency, comfort, connection, and hope found in sitcoms are often something that we lack in our constantly changing everyday life. From the 1950s to the 1990s and beyond, sitcoms have not only Wanda Maximoff’s safe place but America’s safe space! @cfuchstv #304F23

Wanda Vision and the Safety of Sitcoms: Wanda & Vision, a power couple in the Marvel Universe set the backdrop for this eerie dark comedy series which highlights the important role of the American sitcom. So... Let's talk about WANDAVISON! @cfuchstv and #304F23

@henry_nate88194 You hit the nail right on the head pointing out how at the end of day freedom of speech/expression is controlled by these big companies. An example of this would be how current world events are being reported on in the news. @cfuchstv #304F23

That’s because even though there are protections to free speech, the companies that allow voices to be heard have the final say. Sure, as an American you can say whatever you want on Twitter, the government won’t stop you. But Twitter might.

@cfuchstv #304F23 One of the biggest things Americans seem to be passionate about is the First Amendment or Freedom of Speech. However, I would argue that the First Amendment is not as liberating to creatives as some would think.🇺🇸

@DouglasXaviJ Wonderfully put Xavi! I think the film industry as a whole is suffering from mass commercialization and franchising. Financial gain outweighs a good narrative at the end of the day... #304F23 @cfuchstv

The massive success of Marvel movies led to a homogenization of content. When a particular style or genre becomes hugely popular, studios often try to replicate that success, leading to a flood of similar films. DC Studios is the prime example.

The new superhero films, specifically Marvel are taking over cinema for the worse. Along with successful franchises, they seem to dominate the box office. Just like any other media on the internet, this seems to be the “trend” when it comes to films in our time. #304F23 @cfuchstv

@oliviaghhh It's surprising to think that Yellowjackets is able to depict so many genuine experiences of girlhood considering the show's setting (middle of nowhere woods). However, I think this just goes to show how some things are universal to being a teenage girl. @cfuchstv #304F23

The show showcases moments of girlhood that are recognizable to anyone who has been a teenage girl, like dancing with the person you like at a school dance or questioning religious beliefs.

@restisc0nfetti When thinking about 'bury your gays' trope, I'm reminded of the tendency for Black character's to be the first to die in horror films. Both tropes reinforce homophobic and racist beliefs, while pushing the narrative of the 'sacrificial' marginalized identity. #304F23 @cfuchstv

Lexa, the only lesbian character in her series, and Tara, one of two lesbians in her series, both die accidental deaths from “stray bullies” that serve absolutely nothing to the plot. Lesbians in popular TV shows are just thrown away, rather than having their stories advanced.

There is a lack of lesbian representation in media. Specifically, a lack of diverse and accurate representation. There needs to be more of it to combat the underrepresentation & inaccurate portrayals that doom lesbians to awful tropes & harmful stereotypes. @cfuchstv #304F23

@SarahRa97306042 @cfuchstv Thank you so much Sarah! I thought that including film recommendations might help to conceptualize the things I was talking about, as well as just highlight amazing queer Arab films!😊

@cece_304 @cfuchstv This was very well written, Cecilia! It is incredibly important for people to see themselves represented in media. I appreciated you including some film recommendations. I am intrigued to watch them and learn more about the struggles of this particular group! Thanks for sharing!

Media often overlooks marginalized identities, especially intersectional ones like being queer and Arab. The white LGBTQ+ experience is used as an encompassing meter for what all queer experiences are like, which only forsakes queer POC narratives entirely. @cfuchstv #304F23

When we celebrate global queer realities, especially in a medium like film or TV, we are validating the experiences of those often forgotten. More so, we give voice to those who have long been told they are voiceless. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 @cfuchstv #304F23

The complexities + nuances of the POC queer experience, specifically for queer Arabs, is one that deserves acknowledgment. Movies like CARAMEL (2007) and Cousins (2023), film festivals like Queer Cinema for Palestine, & shows like BBC's Juice are proof of this. @cfuchstv #304F23

"to be queer, Arab, and American is to be constantly under siege: a minority within a minority, doubly marginalised from Western society for being a racialised security threat and from your own Arab community for being an abject, sinful deviant..." @cfuchstv #304F23
