Going into the severe weather and hurricane season, this cannot be good. The Commerce Department has laid off hundreds of NOAA employees, many with specialized skills who work at one of the world's top climate science and weather forecasting agencies. Why it matters: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is responsible for providing weather watches and warnings, monitoring and studying Earth's climate, as well as operating weather satellites and protecting marine life. The layoffs of probationary employees that began Thursday hit soon after cuts at the behest of Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency occurred at other climate and environment agencies. The big picture: NOAA's missions require staff to work around the clock to monitor dangerous weather, earthquakes that could cause tsunamis, and other hazards. In recent weeks, NOAA's National Weather Service has issued warnings for deadly flooding in Kentucky, heavy snow, frigid temperatures and other hazards across the country. While NOAA had pushed for public safety exemptions from the layoffs for NWS meteorologists, not all were granted. A congressional aide reported hearing that "some" at NWS were spared but "not many."

WATCH: The eye of CAT 4 Hurricane #Beryl is now precariously close to the south shore of Jamaica. Maximum sustained winds are currently set at 140 mph. Seen below, a high resolution loop of the last 90 minutes from GOES East with a false color layer to highlight the eye. Scary stuff.

The wait is almost over! Here is the latest information of the 7" hailstone found by Storm Chaser Val Castor in Vigo Park. If this becomes an official record it will shatter the previous record of 6.416" from Hondo, Texas in 2021! @MonsterEnergy

Sometimes on a midnight shift when the weather is quiet, we track trains instead of precipitation on radar! Whenever there is a strong morning inversion, weather radar can detect some interesting non-meteorological signatures. #kswx #trains

Update! The state of CA snowpack on January 11 is now at 102% of the April 1st avg (typical date of the peak snowpack). Also, the state now sits at 226% of avg for this date and is higher than the snowpack trace of 1982-1983 in all 3 sections of the #Sierra! #CAwx #CAsnow

A very snowy start to the season, with lake effect events focusing upon the #Buffalo airport and vicinity. The 92.7" of snow is not only the most snow to start the winter season through #Christmas, but also just 2.7" behind the typical entire seasonal snowfall.

The @NWSSPC is monitoring what appears to be a multi-day severe weather event across parts of the central U.S. Mon, Tue, and Wed. Large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes all appear possible each day. Make a family plan now, before storms develop. More: weather.gov/safety/tornado…

A bit ago, we heard some clatter that sounded like hoof-steps on our roof. We checked the security cameras and to our surprise, Santa had come back to launch our morning weather balloon! We couldn't believe our eyes! Be sure to watch to the end! #txwx #merrychristmas #santa
