Here are my thoughts on recent events in Venezuela: 1/ Maduro is (or rather, was) an undemocratically elected and cruel dictator who has brutally oppressed and murdered Venezuelans. 2/ Venezuelans are totally entitled to celebrate the removal of that brutal dictator who has destroyed their lives and country over the years. 3/ American military intervention entails a high risk of worsening short and long-term conditions in Venezuela. Especially under Trump, who is more interested in exploiting the natural resources of the country than in the human rights and freedoms of Venezuelans or the stability of the country. 4/ A foreign aggression of Venezuelan territorial sovereignty sets a new precedent in the norms of conduct in international relations, further undermining the concept of a "rules-based international order". In other words, stronger states will be increasingly encouraged, in defiance of international law, to use violence against weaker states, leading to more wars. For instance, Russia will use the illegal American intervention in Venezuela to justify its illegal occupation of Ukraine, and Israel will use it as well to continue its illegal occupation of Palestinian, Lebanese, and Syrian territories. Additionally, the USA can use that as an example of "testing the waters"; they may later try to invade Iran in an attempt to topple the regime, or even in territories belonging to friendly countries to America, like Greenland, where Trump has put much of his focus. China will likely also exploit this moment to rationalize the usage of force in its relations with Taiwan, increasing the chances of future invasion by pointing out America as an example.
