This is damning against the monitor. As a UAW member in manufacturing I am completely dumbfounded how any reasonable person wouldn't/couldn't see the clear conflict here. This is a monitor gone rogue and is fueled by a personal vendetta against a democratically elected leader.

Yeah, Barofsky just totally oversteps here. He’s not monitoring union corruption here, he’s monitoring the union’s institutional position re public policy. Whether he thinks that position is wonderful or horrible, he’s got *no procedural/interventional role* re it at all!!!

Here’s the full transcript of the call between Shawn Fain and the UAW federal monitor, Neil Barofsky, in which Barofsky tells Fain that the UAW’s statement calling for a ceasefire is reminiscent of the kind of dehumanizing language that led to the Holocaust. Barofsky had previously denied the call unfolded the way it did.

My head is still spinning from the federally appointed monitor Barofsky telling Fain that the UAW’s historic opposition to fascism, apartheid, right wing death squads, and now genocide in Gaza is similar to statements made by German labor unions “in the run-up to the Holocaust.”

The personal call federally appointed monitor Neil Barofsky made to UAW President Shawn Fain was an obvious abuse of his authority to influence the union’s political positions. It also directly contradicts how he characterized that conversation to the UAW Executive Board.

The federal monitor who investigated UAW leader Shawn Fain personally told him that he believed simply saying Israel had committed genocide was antisemitic. (He added, bizarrely, that if Israel committed genocide, "it wouldn't look like this.")

The transcripts also show Barofsky repeatedly urging Fain & UAW leaders to confer w/ Ira Forman, a guy who later denigrated & smeared the anti-genocide protesters at Harvard (many of them UAW members) & seemed to admonish the university for not doing more to repress the protests.

After winning a 10-day strike at American Axle/Dauch, one of the first calls UAW Local 2093 bargaining chair Josh Jager got congratulating them was from @AbdulElSayed. Abdul had our backs on the picket line. He’ll have our backs in the Senate.

This should be one of the biggest stories out there - an unaccountable federal official trying to interfere with the internal democracy of one of the biggest unions in the US to punish its leaders for criticizing Israel

Neil Barofsky’s personal support for genocide is irreparably interfering with his duties and he should resign from his position immediately. The UAW deserves an unbiased Monitor, not someone improperly acting on his personal politics.

Shawn Fain won UAW's biggest contract victories in 40 years and organized the South for the first time ever. Now, right before his re-election and ahead of a potential 2028 general strike, the DOJ opened a grand jury investigation into him — via a federal monitor Fain has clashed with since the UAW's Gaza ceasefire resolution. Unions are one of the last real structural checks on oligarchy. That's exactly why the most effective labor leader in a generation is facing this kind of pressure right when it matters most.
