As a mandate, I would make every single 4th grader, build the chair they would sit for the school year during the first week of school. It would be a great team building exercise and teach kids about engineering and manufacturing. I’m talking about turning raw wood into a functional chair. Kids could even interview for specific tasks but everyone would need to contribute. I’d get some pushback on this but during the year, a Thanksgiving Meal would be another task and making a button down shirt would be another.
As a kid, a Wood Shop class and Home Economics really opened my world to say, “I can do that”.
It might slowly flip the script for people wanting to manufacture stuff.

In 35 years we flipped the US map from manufacturing being the largest employer in most states to healthcare being the largest employer.

Why do "lower-income" Americans have car payments? Growing up we had "beaters" because we were "lower-income." And even when I started at well-paying law firm, my car was used $3,000 one. Didn't have car payments for another 3 years once I got finances in order.
