ON AGRICULTURE President Tinubu led administration has launched a nationwide farmers’ data audit and registry which is aimed at eliminating “briefcase farmers”- individuals who fraudulently benefit from agricultural interventions. - The initiative is part of the administration’s efforts to curb food insecurity by reducing the corruption in the intervention distribution value chain. - A digitally backed system is being incorporated to ensure the right farmers get the needed support at all times as against the current system where “briefcase farmers” benefit without contributing to food production. Also, plans have been finalized to establish cattle breeding centres in each of the six geopolitical zones of the country. The initiative will be overseen by the new federal ministry of livestock development and is expected to reduce the issues of farmers-herders crisis and facilitate the development of the livestock value chain. A reminder that several initiatives have been embarked upon by this administration to ensure food production is ramped up and make Nigeria a major hub for agriculture in the nearest future. - The ongoing mechanization program where 10,000 tractors are expected to be delivered to the country over the next 5 years; 2,000 has been delivered alongside other equipment. - The Special Agro Processing Zones initiative in collaboration with African Development Bank. - The Agropocket initiative which has seen the cultivation of over 133,000 hectares of wheat in the Northern part of the country among others.
