India's censorship problem just went international. The US Trade Representative's 2026 National Trade Estimate Report has formally called out India's content takedown regime, flagging that US firms face an increasing number of takedown requests for content and user accounts that appear politically motivated. The takedowns under IT Rules have been classified as non-tariff trade barriers, alongside frequent internet shutdowns. Vishwaguru Modi once said 'Criticism is soul of democracy' Yet this regime has normalised burying criticism without hesitation. In fact recently, MeitY has proposed amendments to the IT Rules, 2021 to let the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issue blocking orders for news content posted even by non publishers. This effectively brings independent voices under direct control. Meanwhile, the BJP IT Cell continues to operate without scrutiny. All this can mean only one thing. The voice of dissent is growing louder and the BJP is very scared.

His name was Mukesh Chandrakar. He was 28 years old. He ran a YouTube channel called Bastar Junction from Chhattisgarh. In December 2024 he exposed corruption in a Rs 120 crore road construction project in Bijapur. Original project cost in 2010 was Rs 73 crore. By 2021 it had escalated to Rs 188 crore. Rs 116 crore paid for work that was incomplete and substandard. Two PWD officials were suspended because of his reporting. On January 3 2025 his body was found stuffed in a septic tank. At the home of the contractor he had exposed. The contractor was his own cousin. He was killed for doing his job honestly. India has a Whistleblowers Protection Act. Mukesh Chandrakar never got its protection.
