Without history we tend to consider the status quo normal, and other possibilities anomalous. But the original proponents of today's status quo on US streets called their own position "radical," and the status quo we live with every day was their far-fetched, radical aspiration.






Let me double down and go through some numbers. I agree that too much is better than too little and we should aim for some overheating. The question is how much. Much too much is both possible and harmful. I think this package is too much.

During the Bush and Obama eras I felt like I was very much in tune with, and part of, coastal urban educated liberal American culture. Since the Trump era, I've felt increasingly alienated from that culture.
