I have spoken with Stellantis to stress my disappointment with their decision to prioritize investment into the U.S. and with Unifor to be clear that I will never stop fighting for Ontario’s world-class auto workers. This decision is especially painful for those workers who have been out of jobs for months. Our government will continue to use every tool we have, including through our $20 million investment in POWER Centres to support displaced workers, including through retraining to re-enter the workforce as quickly as possible. No provincial funding has flowed to Stellantis for its Brampton project. Stellantis has a duty to live up to their promise to Brampton autoworkers and continue with their allocation in Brampton. No provincial funding will be given until we receive clear assurances on when the plant will restart operations and meet that commitment. This news is another reminder that we need the federal government to stand up for the 157,000 workers in Ontario’s auto sector by maintaining tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. We need the federal government to work with us to get moving on major projects — building nuclear facilities, mining critical minerals, shipbuilding, pipelines and ports — that will unlock economic opportunities and create new jobs for workers across the province.

In the gov't's release, RNAO CEO @DorisGrinspun applauds the gov't for strengthening nursing education to help address staffing shortages, and urges gov't and employers to also prioritize retaining existing nursing talent. To be empowered to succeed, women need to know they are welcomed and supported at the workplace. By protecting parental leave and long-term illness leave for more workers who need it, we can help keep more women from having to choose between their careers and families or health.
