A 30-year-old cleric from Bihar, Maulana Tousif Raza Mazhari, was found dead near railway tracks close to Bareilly on April 26, 2026. While authorities have termed it an accident, his family alleges he was assaulted and thrown from a moving train. In a call recording, he is heard saying people were drunk, speaking abusively, and beating him, asking for the police to be called. His wife said he contacted her during the journey, claiming he was being attacked and falsely accused of theft, and she alleges she witnessed the assault over a video call. The cleric, an imam and madrasa teacher, had travelled to Bareilly for a religious event and was returning home when the incident occurred.
