⚾️ If My Kid Wants to Play College Baseball, Here Are the 8 Steps I’d Follow ⚾️
I haven’t raised a college baseball player (yet), but I’ve helped develop thousands—from Little League to high school, college, and even the pros.
If my kid decides this is the path he wants to take, here’s how I’d try to support him.
Step 1: Build a Positive Association with Baseball (Ages 0-5)
The goal? Baseball = fun.
✅ Take them to games.
✅ Watch baseball movies & shows.
✅ Read baseball books.
✅ Collect baseball cards.
✅ Let them wear baseball gear if they want.
✅ Play whiffle ball in the backyard—ONLY if they’re interested.
⚠️ But NO structured baseball yet.
No tee ball at ages 3-4. No formal training. No drills.
Why? Because "baseball" at 4 or younger might actually push more kids away from the game than it attracts. It’s just too early for real fun.
At this stage, baseball should be something they see and enjoy—not something they're forced into.
Step 2: Start Organized Baseball (Ages 5-8)
Start them between ages 5-7.
If you wait until 8, they might already be behind (depending on the kid).
⚠️ If you put them in rec ball… coach or assist.
One bad coach can turn a kid off from baseball forever. Seen it too many times.
Step 3: Multi-Sport Athletes Are Better Athletes (Ages 5-10)
🏀🏈⚽ DO. NOT. SPECIALIZE. TOO. EARLY.
Put them in everything—soccer, basketball, flag football, gymnastics, swimming.
Why? To build balance, coordination, and athleticism.
Robotic baseball players don’t make it. Athletes do.
Step 4: Get Private Instruction. Just a Handful of Lessons (Ages 8-10)
Not year-round.
Not 3x a week.
And not just hitting.
Get a few lessons with the best instructor in town.
✅ Hitting
✅ Throwing
✅ Defense
✅ Mental game
Why? To course correct early and develop good movement patterns before bad habits set in.
You may just need a few to set em straight. Make sure you watch as a parent to double down at home.
Step 5: Play 2 Seasons of Baseball Per Year (Ages 10-12)
⚾ Spring + Fall. ✅ ✅
Rec ball is still fine, but they need more reps & instruction.
Sign them up for skills clinics & camps from a trusted local club program—especially if you’re not a baseball person.
At this point, baseball should be a big part of their life, but still on their terms.
Step 6: The 13-14 Year Old Transition (Most Critical Step)
🔥 This is where kids either fall in love with the game… or fall out.
✅ Find the best development-focused program in town.
✅ Learn lead-offs, stealing, holding runners.
✅ Start strength training.
❌ DO NOT let them blow out their arm. Reduce the risk.
They NEED 2 periods of at least 8 weeks per year of no throwing. Or they’re setting themselves up for increased risk of a catastrophic injury.
Step 7: 14-16 Years Old = Build a Bigger Engine
💪 Freshman & Sophomore years are about:
🏋️♂️ Strength & conditioning (3x per week)
🥗 Eating right
📚 Keeping grades HIGH (increases options)
⚾ Playing club/travel ball in the summer & fall
❄️ NO throwing from Thanksgiving to mid-Jan. Rest matters.
Step 8: Junior & Senior Year – The Home Stretch
This is when they start specializing (if they aren’t a freak athlete who can play multiple sports).
✅ Keep lifting.
✅ Keep grades up.
✅ Exposure-based programs can help, but development > exposure.
✅ BE A HIGH-CHARACTER KID. Scouts care about this.
If they’re good enough, the right people will find them.
⚠️ Final Thought: You Can't Want It More Than They Do
At every stage, you have to check in:
➡️ Do they love it?
➡️ Are they driven?
➡️ Are they having fun?
You cannot force this. You cannot push them into it. It must come from within.
This is my approach based on what I’ve seen work.
My kid is only 7, so I’m still in it.
For those who have been through it...
What am I missing?
What do you disagree with?
What'd you do right/wrong?
Drop your thoughts below. ⬇️
Appreciate you!

The social media hitting #gurus are teaching this to kids! The sad part is the parents of these kids have no clue that this is going to negatively impact their kids ability to hit in the future. 🤦 #shegone @notgaetti @BobFile @twuench @billdubs @SliderDominate @ROXSystem @MLB
