NewsLtd: Former NSW coach Brad Fittler believes a new NRL team based out of New Zealand would be monumental, but the nation would benefit more from a new competition to sit under the Warriors.

@sandylanceley @CamMagicMan @cambibs We could argue, but it’s pointless until it actually happens. So I respect your opinion 🤝
English

@chasingroospod @CamMagicMan @cambibs It will take decades to get a reliable feed of first grade talent from PNG. The NRL can’t solve the biggest obstacle, most people are extremely poor and need to leave school early to help their families. This is a country that is still overwhelmingly a subsistence economy.
English

@CamMagicMan @chasingroospod @footyindustryAU @irl_sumo I think fta gets sliced and diced, but the pay tv rights remain on one network for all games - which is what gets offered via the watchNRL app
English

The US entertainment giant that owns Network Ten has held discussions to outsource its entire Australian sales arm as it considers going all-in for the NRL broadcast rights, with one of its key global executives jetting in to watch the sport’s opening games in Las Vegas.

@gavin_laing @footyindustryAU @irl_sumo Hard to say which party would deliver the best product. From from a cost perspective, hopefully no more than one streaming service / Pay Tv involved
English

@cienfuegos1958 @AlfredBuxx @BradWalterSport @SteveMascord @SmithAtk23152 @roboh11 This is a good way of looking at it
English

@AlfredBuxx @BradWalterSport @SteveMascord @SmithAtk23152 @chasingroospod @roboh11 Rugby is a sport with two descendants. Rugby union, and rugby league. Both share a common history before 1895. Both are radically different in nature now to the sport of 1894.
Rugby’s pre-1895 story is all of our stories, you don’t own it. Rugby league is rugby, deal with it.
English

One person “going to the rugby this weekend” (it was Roosters vs Souths), another whose “son plays rugby (league)”. It’s happening more than usual in my personal experience.

With the NRL being so popular these days, I’m starting to hear more casual fans referring to the game as “Rugby”. Interesting trend.
English

@chasingroospod @wallybechara @henri_lamer In Qld everyone calls it footy or league. “Rugby” always means union.
English

@chasingroospod @roboh11 @SteveMascord Be happy with being called League lads, it’s unbecoming of you to want and call yourselves the name of another code just because it’s the name that’s better known globally.
English

@wallybechara @henri_lamer True. I’m talking about casual fans in Sydney though.
English

@chasingroospod @henri_lamer Pommies or fans in afl states always call it rugby
English

@chasingroospod @AndrewRLP Ohh right you’re trying to argue historical ownership…. Yikes that’s a funny hill to die on.
Maybe research which version of rugby was formed first if that’s the path you want to go.
Anyway, Union is the ‘Rugby World Cup’, League is the ‘Rugby League World Cup’
English

@SmithAtk23152 @AndrewRLP lol. Do better research. I’ll give you a clue. The first “Rugby World Cup” was in France in 1954.
English

@chasingroospod @AndrewRLP Union…. You google Rugby World Cup and first 5 things are about Rugby Union.
Unless of course you’re a league fan who doesn’t understand how Google search algorithms work and didn’t search this from a cookie free browser.
English

@whits106 I’m pretty cool with it. Seems to have caused a little stir.
English

@chasingroospod I mean both codes are “rugby” so it can be used for either.
One was formed as a Union, then the breakaway as a League.
Who actually cares what people say they’re still supporting/going to/talking about league games.
Ppl get their knickers in a knot over it & I don’t get why.
English

@SmithAtk23152 @AndrewRLP Fun exercise. Look up the first instance of a “Rugby World Cup”. Let me know what you find.
English

@chasingroospod @AndrewRLP One is called the ‘Rugby’ World Cup… the other is called the ‘Rugby League’ World Cup..
English

@pTah_XV I see this a lot as well. Not many in NSW/QLD would call AFL “Footy” or
“football”
English

@chasingroospod Yes, it’s similar to the debate in AFL circles. Is it AFL or just football/footy.
English

@bensc00 I understand that. I’m talking about a trend in noticing in Sydney.
English

@chasingroospod In this half of the country we call both rugby and struggle to tell the difference
English
@chasingroospod @SteveMascord League and union can both be called rugby, no matter how much the union hierarchy wants to own the word.
