Espresso Mainnet 0 release was launched in October 2024, which initiated the launch of the Espresso Network — a blockchain platform aiming to improve interoperability, scalability, and performance across decentralized applications (dApps) and blockchains. What is Mainnet 0 about? It's the first live version of the Espresso Network in a production environment. It is the earliest step toward building Espresso's long-term vision. Though it is a full production network, it is still conservative in its parameters and structure to ensure stability and safety at the outset. Key goals • To Launch the Espresso Network in a controlled, stable environment. • To Validate the core architecture, especially the HotShot consensus protocol. • To Set the foundation for future performance improvements and decentralization. Core Components includes 1. Global Confirmation Layer •This Layer acts as a shared infrastructure that rollups and other blockchains can seamlessly plug into, enabling faster and more reliable bridging of assets across ecosystems. •By serving as a neutral coordination layer, it allows different chains to agree on a shared transaction history and synchronize securely, significantly improving cross-chain interoperability. 2. HotShot Consensus Protocol • HotShot is the consensus algorithm that powers the Espresso Network, making its production debut with Mainnet 0. Built to scale efficiently to thousands of consensus nodes • HotShot maintains low latency and high throughput, ensuring fast and reliable transaction confirmation. Inspired by HotStuff—the protocol behind Facebook’s Libra/Diem •HotShot advances its design to deliver even greater performance and scalability for decentralized systems. 3. Node Operators and Decentralization • Mainnet 0 launches with 20 node operators running a total of 100 nodes, operating in a controlled, non-permissionless environment to ensure safety and stability during the early stages. While participation is initially limited, future milestones will open the network to more node operators and introduce a proof-of-stake mechanism • This will enhance decentralization and increase economic security by requiring validators to stake tokens, aligning their incentives with the health of the network. 4. Block Size and Latency • Mainnet 0 begins with a conservative 1 MB block size to prioritize stability, with plans to scale up to 5 MB in the short term as demand grows. Transactions initially confirm in around 8 seconds, but upcoming improvements to the HotShot protocol—drawing on ideas from • HotStuff-2—aim to reduce this to 5–6 seconds. A future VID (Verifiable Information Dispersal) update will further lower confirmation latency to approximately 3 seconds, even as the network scales to thousands of nodes, enabling larger block sizes without compromising performance. What's Next After Mainnet 0? • Proof-of-Stake Launch: Make the network economically secure and more decentralized. • VID-based Consensus Enhancements: Improve both performance and scalability. • Open Participation: Allow more node operators to join. • Rollup & AppChain Integration: Encourage real applications to use Espresso as their confirmation layer. • Increased Block Size and Throughput: Accommodate more data and higher transaction volumes.
