@SCoastSteve Yes, but those were service personnel pressing the buttons of an automated elevator for you, not elevator technicians cranking a manual electrical relay switch and eyeballing how level the cab was at each floor and telling you to watch your step, like in the olden days.

Nobody is skeptical of autonomous elevators because nobody alive today was even around to see a human elevator operator in real life before the last one got laid off. Automation is far safer.

I do think the timeline here is important context.
Vance flew to Rome in May of 2025, for the inaugural Mass of Pope Leo, with a delegation from the U.S., & had this invite with him. He did not fly there last week to hand deliver it for a few months from now & then receive a “nope, going to Lampedusa instead” from the Pope within a couple days.
