black british women are milesssss behind both african american women and african / caribbean diaspora in the US too. the obsession with class / beauty maintenance is quite specifically pernicious in the U.K.

@ver_nanaaa this is such a rudimentary way to think about socially enforced insecurities. i’d recommend you read belly of the beast by deshaun harrison.

@chlosih We all have insecurities but I think our number one priority should be making sure we dont make our insecurities problems others have to deal with. And obviously parenting is a big example but also just with your peers

why “let black women do what they want with their hair” is stupid. the cost of black hair practices: 1) financial cost 2) health cost 3) mental health cost e.g. low self esteem, over fixation on physical appearance 4) black friendships + black children

@chlosih It’s honestly not normal how much people project their own insecurities onto others. And that should be fixed before we care about hair

i hate when people use their degree to mislead people on the legitimacy of their claim. so i hope it doesn’t appear that i’m doing that. my comparison was no more than an observation. that said, i do engage with this topic through the lens of sociological praxis + theory.

engaging in beauty practices leads to negative experiences for those who can’t / won’t participate. how are you using your agency and your privilege? if YOU are the black executive and you always have a buss down, you are both the victim and the enforcer.

@chlosih I think you’re blind. So many beautiful black women of African descent in the UK in London. Maybe you’re too busy looking in the mirror?

@PinkRhynos just because you’re unfamiliar with the topic, doesn’t make it a plantain topic. i’ve been writing about beauty capital for 6+ years. it’s an academic area of study that impacts all facets of black life. also, fuck off.

correlation does not equal causation. MPs are a tiny proportion of the upper class (debatable). look for sources where being perceived as black & unkempt bears value. find sources that show racial prejudice against black people with afros & locs. weigh those up & get back to me
Rielle@Rielle212

@chlosih Actually being less put together is an class signifier in Britain. Hence Kemi badenoch, kwasi kwarteng and even Nana Boateng with the unkempt thing going on. To signal to the public that they’re not “that” kind of black.

@chlosih I've noticed the same. Question; does this still hold when you look at the UK vs cities in the US which have widely comparable weather and water hardness? As the UK's temperature, hard water, and humidity combine for conditions that are particularly harsh for Black hair + skin.
