Except as I explained with my Halo example, the competitive ruleset isn't actually inherently more skill based with most of it's changes.
I play fighting games competitively, I understand the importance of having a skillgap. This isn't about that, it's about the ruleset and the meta being different for the sake of it.

@Majora__Z @battery706 It's not competitive play if you're not always looking for any edge over your opponent. It's casual play, by definition. Maybe they WANT to FEEL like they're competitive but they can't handle losing. However, losing a lot, over and over, is necessary to begin building skill.

Because players might want to play the game competitively, but specifically within the "normal" meta and ruleset
I love Halo and would be down to take the time to really git gud and to try to play the game at a higher level even if I know I'd never be a top player, but because competitive Halo removes most of the weapon sandbox (even guns which aren't RNG and have counterplay against them so their removal doesn't even inherently make the game more competitive) and the weapon variety is what I find most fun about Halo's gameplay, I have no incentive to do so.
Hell, in Halo Infinite, there's not even a ranked playlist I can play that uses normal settings: All the ranked playlists uses competitive settings, compared to past games where there were at least ranked modes that used the normal ruleset and weapon selection in addition to comp setting playlists

@chflorelius A real critical analysis (not just reactionary dismissal) would discover that the DPRK, and all other socialist state projects, were never allowed to develop on their own terms to create whatever society they wanted. They are under imperialist siege from day one, every time.

Watching the US response to the impending loss of the war, I have realised that the Americans simply do not understand what Iran is. It is an enormous civilisational power with a huge, well-organised military. Many in the Trump admin seem to think its a janky Arab dictatorship.

Iran has more than 40 million men fit for military service, all of whom have been conscripted, trained and served in the armed services for 21 months. Some 1.4 million men reach military age per annum. For reference, Vietnam had no more than 10 million men of military age in 1965. US commitment of ground forces peaked at a half a million men. US armed strength was 1.88 million, 3X larger than 0.62 million today. Even if the US could field enough divisions in Iran, which it assuredly cannot (see rt), there is just no possibility of winning a counterinsurgency war in Iran. None. Zero. Nada. Not only is defeat certain if the US commits ground forces to occupy Iran, it will chew up the American army. It’s going to make Vietnam look like a cake walk. Can’t remember the name of the Substack author who wrote that any serious war will consume the American military and basically put it out of business for a decade. If the US commits large-scale ground forces to Iran, that wager becomes a near certainty.

I don't think he's criticizing skillgaps and high level play inherently, but rather how in certain circumstances, the meta or rulesets that can develop go against both the developer's intent and what the primary community for the game finds fun
Sometimes that new meta is fun too, but sometimes it really does errode the vibes and what's enjoyable about the base game

"games journalists bad at games" is such a pick me thing to say for someone who does games journalism. It's giving "not like other girls" energy.
Presenting yourself as a "real gamer" by putting down journalists is basically a dog whistle these days because it's something all the culture war grifters do to try and discredit criticism that doesn't align with their views, or to try and give more credibility to whatever bs they're selling.
