With Mr Luxon as woke as can be and his Defence Minister Judith Collins not much better, is it time for Chris Penk to step up? Back in 2021, Mr Penk gave an interview to Sky News where he was highly critical of wokeness in the Defence Forces. Penk was speaking after Jacinda Ardern’s Defence Minister Peeni Henare had demanded that the winner of an Army essay writing contest be denied his win and the essay be taken down from the Defence web site. The essay had posited that wokeness was destroying the warrior ethos of the Defence Forces. Army Chief Major General John Boswell took the essay down as instructed by Henare and acknowledged that the decision to award it first prize had been an error. In his 2021 interview Mr Penk criticises the army Chief’s surrender and agrees that the essay writer had things pretty much right. I doubt Chris would be welcome to express such views in the National party today. A shame really.
