The fact that this account exists and it has nearly 120K followers is what makes this place so sublime. Goodbye @WorldBollard, I’ll miss you most of all.

@GavinNewsom @Steve_Glazer If you don't want another embarrassing data problem to come out of your CDPH, I suggest you take a look at the seriously flawed use of episode date in a forward sliding window in an environment with testing result delays. twitter.com/chriswhsu/stat…

@calonghurst How they calculate the case rate remains a mystery ...

@LTrain18 @calonghurst "Although case rates are often calculated using the date they were reported to the health department, this measure uses the episode date. The episode date is the earliest of several dates and corresponds to the earliest date that the case can be known to have had the infection."

@devin_breise @LTrain18 @calonghurst @SanDiegoCounty To get the flawed numbers that CDPH uses, you need to use the episode date for each case (which we don't have access to). I've written a lengthy explanation of why CDPH number are so low and why they are junk: twitter.com/chriswhsu/stat…

@LTrain18 @calonghurst @SanDiegoCounty Did you get an answer on this? Using 14 days of data from yesterday back provides a case rate of 162/100K, a far cry from the 101-105 reported in the UT today.

1/ COVID (@UCSanDiego) Chronicles - Aug 9th, 2020 Sunday night update... @UCSDHealth is clearly over another hump. Only 4 positives yesterday (last date we had less than 5 positives was June 18th). 7 day rolling average decreased to ~12/day.

@calonghurst @LTrain18 @CDPHE @SanDiegoCounty Yes, and the specific numbers (really dates) being used by the CDPH don't make any sense. Any delays in testing will cause a significant undercounting of cases. They simply disappear. twitter.com/chriswhsu/stat…

@LTrain18 @calonghurst @CDPHE @SanDiegoCounty I've been trying to make the following case to the California Department of Public Health for over two weeks, with no luck. twitter.com/chriswhsu/stat… Using Episode Date when there is significant delays in testing will *always* significantly undercount the number of cases.

@calonghurst @CDPHE @SanDiegoCounty I know. But it still doesn’t explain how wildly different the math is if you just add the past 14 days of tests! It would be great if they could spell out the calcs because working parents like me are depending on this data for schools to reopen.

1/ The open/close schools debate is complicated by the ample supply of incidents to support both sides. Israel opened schools and cases rose; Netherlands, Denmark, Germany opened schools and cases stayed low. A camp in Georgia, a high school in Mississippi had outbreaks...

Using a Case Rate based upon Episode Date will severely undercount cases in an environment of long testing turnaround. "The episode date is the earliest of several dates and corresponds to the earliest date that the case can be known to have had the infection.”
