@dead_baseball All good points. However, when the landlord decides to sell, you will have to move. If they decide to increase your rent by 50%, you will have to move. Not everything is purely a financial investment. A home you intend to live in for the rest of your life, is a good thing.

A similar sized home to what I'm renting would cost 50% more monthly (including mortgage, taxes, repairs). Would require a down payment, which I would take out of investments. And housing prices have historically grown less than the S&P 500.

This is very wrong. I ran the numbers where I live right now and buying vs renting a similar sized home and investing the difference comes nowhere close to being the better option financially over the long run.
