I met Jake at three months old—soaked, skinny, and alone on the side of the road. I couldn’t keep walking. I picked him up and promised him better. A week later he was gone. Someone stole him. I searched everywhere, came up empty, and felt my heart split where his collar should have been. On the seventh day, something made me look out the window. There he was—across the street, sitting like a question. Lost. Hurt. Trying so hard to come home. I ran. When I lifted him I felt it all: a right leg broken in two places, a fractured left hip, a small break in his spine. We did everything we could—rods and screws to rebuild the leg, time and care to heal the hip, patience to let his back recover. It wasn’t easy. It was worth everything. Five years on, Jake is pure joy—goofy, bright, and shamelessly loving. After everything he survived just to return to me, I knew I would never let him go. He’s my brave boy. My shadow. My heart.

Nelson brayed on Wednesday, which he has done twice in his life, and both previous times it was about hay. This was not about hay. You have to understand Nelson to understand the size of it. He is a small grey donkey who came free with a horse and has spent every day since assessing the world and finding almost none of it worth a reaction. A pheasant out of the hedge: beneath comment. A carrier bag on the wind: management's problem. The farrier, the vet, Martin the postman at the gate every single morning: all filed, long ago, under fine. Nelson does not spend adrenaline. He has a lifetime's supply precisely because he has never once dipped into it for anything that did not concern the hay. Hector is the one who comes apart. Seventeen years a Cavalry Black, seventeen hands of trained composure, and still, in a quiet field, undone by small things with no rules to them. And undone completely, every time, by the one thing that has never had a rule: Nelson leaving the field. On Wednesday it was the other way round. Hector went down in the morning and did not get up cleanly. Nothing dramatic to look at, a big old horse struggling on wet ground to fold his legs back under him, the way big old horses sometimes do, more indignity than danger. But he was down, and he was working at it, and he was not managing it, and the field was suddenly a place where the large warm reliable thing was not upright. Nelson stood over him. Then Nelson, who assesses everything and hurries for nothing and does not raise the alarm because in his considered view nothing is ever worth waking a tired horse for, raised the alarm. The full cracked bugle of it, flung down the lane, on and on, a donkey who does not do this doing this, until the farmer came out of the house at a run, because a silent donkey suddenly loud means something is wrong in a way a noisy one never could. The farmer got Hector up. It was fine. It was, in the end, a big horse and a bad patch of ground and a bruised dignity, nothing more. Nelson stopped the moment Hector was on his feet. He has not mentioned it since. He went back to the hay. He has assessed the incident and, by every sign available, filed it under dealt with. But he broke his own rule for it. In a whole life of spending no adrenaline on anything, he spent all of it at once, on the one thing he has never admitted to caring about. Hector is grazing this morning, upright, enormous, fine. Nelson is beside him, in the dry corner, first at the hay, saying nothing. He would tell you it was about the hay.

So long, America🫡🇺🇸 49 days ago we landed in the USA to follow our country at the World Cup. We had no idea it would turn into the trip of a lifetime. Thank you to everyone who followed along, and to all the people we met who made this journey even more special. We honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful we are for everything you did for us. This trip exceeded every expectation we had. We came here with an open mind, wanting to experience as much of the country as possible. I still remember telling my friends on the flight to Atlanta that I hoped we’d get to meet a few locals on this trip. Now we’re flying home with friends all across the USA. Before we came, we heard so many stereotypes and warnings about America. People told us about safety concerns, that they might check our social media at the border, and all kinds of other things. None of it matched our experience. This was probably the most welcoming country we’ve ever visited. So if you have the chance to travel, do it. The world isn’t nearly as bad as the media often makes it seem. 99% of people are awesome! I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly: “If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.” Thank you, America ❤️🇺🇸

In the end he had dignity, comfort and lots of love. It was only 6 days but he meant a lot to us all. Very sad this evening as I had big plans for Bear. Proud of the team as always. Give your own dogs an extra cuddle today

Now that the trip is almost over, I want to answer one of the questions we’ve been asked the most: “How are you guys able to afford a trip like this?” The answer is actually pretty simple. We saved up for this trip over the past year, and it wasn’t nearly as expensive as most people probably assume. We stayed mostly in budget hotels, and always split the cost between the three of us. Our flight to the US was also only 255€ for example. The biggest expenses were the rental cars and World Cup tickets. In total the 6 weeks here with everything combined probably cost around 6-7k (It‘s probably 6k but since we also saved money thanks to invitations like the hotel stay in Houston, let‘s say it would’ve been around 7k). I know that’s still a lot of money, but it’s nowhere near what some people seemed to think we were spending. We met other World Cup tourists who told us their trips cost more than $40,000. If you‘re ok with not living in luxury than travelling doesn‘t need to be this expensive. I’ll calculate the exact total once I’m back home.

No one came for Pal today! 😥 He’s only 4 years old! He is set to be 💉in the morning (7/20) at 6:30 a.m. PST. at Stanislaus Animal Services Agency in Modesto, CA. The shelter director will have him put down even though they have many empty kennels! 😳 At this point he can only be saved if a potential foster or adopter reaches out to a rescue tonight and the rescue tags in time! 🙏 Out of state adoptions are possible anywhere in the U.S. via a rescue (with transportation fee).
