While getting back to my normal schedule, I wanted to briefly share one of our e-commerce observations. Because of the spring and summer seasonality, I am mainly looking at the year-over-year change. Compared to last year, the strongest improvements came from the product layer. This store offers prices that are 5% to 20% lower than many competitors, while also fitting more products per page. Every product page includes at least one video, more product images, and fully unique visuals. Product names, prices, and images are visible above the fold on both mobile and desktop. The purchase CTA is also immediately visible, along with multiple information tabs covering key attributes. The informational content is also fresher and consistently links to relevant product and category pages. Whenever there is an industry-specific event or seasonal trend, new blog content is published and used to pass ranking signals to product and category URLs. Of course, the site still has a major weakness: Shopify-related URL bloat and the ranking signal dilution that often comes with it. Even so, the brand has more reviews per product and per category than many of its competitors. This is why I keep saying that in e-commerce SEO, rankings are often shaped first by product ranking and brand ranking, before page ranking alone. Images, names, prices, buy buttons, attribute tabs, fresh informational content, internal links, and reviews all contribute to how the product and the brand are perceived. The result: 21% more clicks year over year, 12% more impressions, and a 52% improvement in average position.
