D.C. is entering a highly consequential political moment. That’s what drew me to the new local reporting team at @NOTUSreports (soon to be The Star!).
I wrapped up my time at @CityCast_DC and will officially join in June. Looking forward to getting to work.

The Star launches in June with dramatically expanded coverage of Washington politics and policy — and new coverage of D.C. itself. The District isn’t just the place where politics happens. It’s home to the people who pull the levers of power. It’s where they live and work and commute and eat and vote and navigate the unique intersection of politics and real life. The Star will cover all of it, from Donald Trump’s stamp on the District to the ambitions of its first new mayor in more than a decade. Who’s wielding power in D.C.? What’s driving them? What impact are they having on housing, schools, transportation and the District’s neighborhoods? What’s next for Home Rule? For statehood? And will the Nationals ever be good again? We’ll do it with the same rigor we bring to our coverage of national politics and policy, and we’ll do it with the best local reporting team in D.C. We’re excited to announce the start of that team today — veteran journalists you know and trust, plus newcomers who will bring fresh eyes to the vibrant and sometimes vexing place we all call home.

@brookepintodc There needs to be more front loaders deployed to pick up the snow into dump trucks. The snow needs to be hauled away. This is how all major cities manage snow. Plows are not enough.

New TLDR: large plows handle main arterial roads; small plows handle side and residential streets. Apparently, many of the small plows broke causing many of the delays we’ve seen this week. The city has now contracted with other companies with smaller plows who’ve been working overnight to get to side streets.
We need to break down the ice and mounds of snow piled next to parking and bus stops. We need to update the technology in our trucks to better track and report on progress.

My office has heard from hundreds of residents with concerns about the snow and ice buildup and removal. We are continuing to elevate your concerns to DPW and we are working to get crews and plows to your streets as soon as possible. I know this is frustrating and we thank you for your patience — DPW will get to everyone, but it is taking longer than usual due to the freezing temperatures icing the snow. Reminder: Please call 311 with requests if your street needs to be plowed. Let’s look out for each other and please shovel your sidewalk to help make sure there is room for people to walk and for neighbors who use wheelchairs to get through.

@darkstarsats don't think DOT has any power. For $NN, it's gonna be FCC/NTIA making the decision. LEO decision is probably gonna be whoever is funding it...maybe DoD? Maybe over time the current MEO GNSS will be retired and the DoD will fund LEO?

Plenty of interesting and nuanced takes on local crime and the federal intervention in D.C. are coming out today. The TLDR is: Crime and disorder are still a problem; Trump’s intervention might not be a sustainable solution; there’s a middle ground to be found (but it’s hard).

The name of the game for Senate Democrats is map expansion. ME and NC won’t cut it when you need to flip 4 seats. That means flipping at least two of IA, OH, FL, TX, MT, KS, or AK.

A bloody Paxton vs. Cornyn primary in a Trump midterm feels like a best case scenario for struggling Texas Dems. If they can’t find a way to make that race competitive it’s a serious issue. No one is running yet and at least one potential (Christian Menefee) is running for House.

@JohnWMcCarthy What this number tells me is that our core base is dissatisfied. They want bold courageous leadership, they want strong opposition, they want the party to take on this Administration. If we as a party don’t fill this role someone else will.

And yet (most) of our policies are popular!
The party is perceived to be too out of step with the mainstream social values of the country—so voters don’t even want to hear our policies!
This isn’t about needing a swing rightward, it’s about needing a swing towards normalcy.
