@planoize @SightUnseen555 @ChrisMartin1961 @bienhaseyo I have a good career and I make a lot of money and I obviously did not follow your advice or anyone over the age of 55 to get it. Do you seriously think people should 'be brave' to get a job at a gym? Is that the alternative here?

@ckcera @SightUnseen555 @ChrisMartin1961 @bienhaseyo Yeah, that will do it. Blame all your troubles on external forces and people. I have seen 3 guys get hired at the gym in the last 6 months. Shaking someone's hand is a great way to introduce yourself. So far my point has only been proven.

I’m seeing, yet again, this surge of hatred for the Boomer generation. I’m a late season Boomer, born in 1961; I’ve worked for nearly 50 years, have been in the same profession for 37 years, I’ve routinely worked 45-60 hours a week. I don’t get why we are so vilified.

@planoize @SightUnseen555 @ChrisMartin1961 @bienhaseyo People behave collectively by responding to actual market conditions. If they aren't behaving the way you think they should, it says more about your awareness of current conditions than about their defective personalities and lack of bravery.

@planoize @SightUnseen555 @ChrisMartin1961 @bienhaseyo This is a hopelessly out of touch thing to say when the entire hiring process is online and depersonalized. You can't just switch careers or find a job in the country. Even those rural jobs only hire from their website and get thousands of responses from all over.

It is a leap of faith, but sometimes the longer road is actually the shorter route. My problem with people of my generation is that we have not encouraged our offspring to take chances. I know lots of successful people who have failed multiple times and came out okay. You never start over completely as you bring experience along with you.

@uncle_deluge I wonder if a lot of these anecdotes are due to the English and Saxon traders being largely bilingual in English and Norse rather than some strained intelligibility. The anecdotes and linguistic evidence imply it anyhow.

The first Icelandic grammar book for example said their orthography should be similar to (what we would now call Old) English because "[they] speak the same language." This is a bizarre statement for us because they clearly are *not* the same language. Nevertheless,

To be clear, and I don't want any ambiguity here, your descent from Shakespeare's godfather grants you such unique insight into an 11th c. poem about Cnut's conquest of England that I should take it on your genetic authority it's actually referring to the 17th c. Anglo-Dutch Wars

@Vivernu Reddit flags are bad because they all look like they were created with Photoshop and don't fit with the embroidered styles, even the complex ones. They're about as timeless as this.

"Reddit flag" discourse is semi-dishonest. Yes there's a certain type of modernist bad "reddit" flag but I think deep down we all know that states having unique designs ALA Tennessee is generally better than the seal on a blank background. People organically display the former.

@theo_nash @AntigoneJournal I'm aware of at least one Byzantine letter that's signed by a person we know from literary sources. Does that count?

@Aerospherology @wylfcen The wright in playwright is also the wright as in wrought. I just think it's interesting that both words imply physical making.

@StatsLime @xor_a_b @MasterTimBlais This is just a fundamental misunderstanding on how anything works at all. An "unbalanced" system would pick race based on context. Do you think it's also biased towards 'the' if that's the most common word?

@xor_a_b @MasterTimBlais Even if this is the answer (which we don't actually know) I think it's perfectly fine to try and balance the output instead of drawing a 90% Asian world x.com/StatsLime/stat…

@MasterTimBlais I'd also like to point out that even if the racial diversity explanation is correct, this is perfectly reasonable, b/c by default the pics are going to be ALL ASIAN. Most people are Asian, and models are usually configured to give the MOST LIKELY depiction, not a RANDOM depiction

@monster_okay @toffee_32 I mean fair, but tbh I would count the entire Roman triumph thing where they strangled the enemy king/chief at the foot of the temple of Jupiter as a sort of kind of human sacrifice

rly hate seeing people talking about the "aztecs" as a monolithic ethnic group of peoples that can be rightfully genocided rather than a ruling empire exercising its power on other peoples

I think one of the actual useful uses of AI is restoring lost media. There's an old magazine cover of MacArthur in a Shogun style, and GPT did a decent job restoring it.

@AlexFondi @Wilkmaster @ProfPaulPoast Maidan was a color revolution where both sides were backed by foreign interests. If you have to compare to the US revolution, you'd look at the independent republics in the east, which were annexed to Russia.
