An Irish drug dealer hid the private keys to 6,000 Bitcoin inside a fishing rod case. When he was arrested in 2017, his landlord cleared out the house. Everything went to the dump — including the keys. $400 million in Bitcoin. Gone. For a decade. Until now. Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB), working alongside Europol, cracked one of the wallets. 500 BTC — roughly $35 million — was transferred directly into Coinbase. This wasn't a mysterious whale waking up after years of silence. The police broke in. Here's the full story: Clifton Collins was a Dublin man who worked as a security guard and beekeeper by day, and ran a large-scale cannabis operation on the side. He converted his drug profits into Bitcoin and spread 6,000 BTC evenly across 12 wallets — 500 BTC each. The private keys were printed on A4 paper and stored inside a fishing rod case at his rental property in Galway. In 2017, police pulled him over during a routine traffic stop and found cannabis in his car. He was arrested. His landlord cleared out the property shortly after. The fishing rod case vanished — and the private keys with it. In 2020, the Irish High Court ordered the seizure of the Bitcoin. But CAB had no way in. At the time, the 6,000 BTC was worth around €50 million. Today, it's worth close to €370 million. They could only wait. So how did they finally get inside? Current speculation points to a cryptographic vulnerability: Collins may have used a flawed random number generator when creating his wallets, making the private keys mathematically predictable. Investigators reportedly used cryptanalysis — not brute force — to reconstruct the key. More significantly, authorities are now optimistic the same technique could be applied to the remaining 11 wallets. If successful, the Irish state would recover all 6,000 BTC — the largest asset seizure in CAB history. That's a lot of weed. Also, a lot of money that will never go towards helping Irish taxpayers.
