This is why "the real darkest dungeon is in our hearts" and "it's about the cycles of guilt" dont work and arent as scary as the actual eldritch dungeon on top of the hill, inside that manor.
"You can always try again" and the final scene of all the heroes celebrating with people don't hold the same weight as knowing you have a graveyard full of fools who you sent into the dungeons to make you money.
A roster being upgraded, trained and conditioned using the glittering gold, trinkets and baubles. Paid for in blood. Until they too die in the dungeon or get discarded when they become useless and not worth spending money on.
