@TaiwanSpecial @nickirich14 @chloetankahhui Who said anything about public housing? The amount of public housing should be somewhere between 0% and 0.5%.
Public housing is not good. The Market does an almost perfect job of allocating fairly-taxed housing.
English

It sounds great. It really does. But before you embrace this too wholeheartedly you should investigate places that have provided free or subsidy housing to its citizens. See what those places look like after ten years. Or the quality of new construction. Our system sucks for the bottom percentile of our population but it’s still better for the vast majority
English

I need people to understand that about 60% of homeless people are employed but just don’t make enough to afford housing and that’s the real issue

@TaiwanSpecial @nickirich14 @chloetankahhui How about just establishing Equal Treatment under the law in CA instead?
1) End rent control
2) Terminate Prop 13
3) Require all cities to have either 250,000 residents or 25 square miles of privately owned land (castrate the NIMBYs)
English

@nickirich14 @chloetankahhui Then they can move to areas of the country with a more reasonable housing market. That’s what freedom of movement is all about
English

@BlomquistForMI The only reason other countries DO have it is BECAUSE we DON'T have it.
I'm going to enjoy watching the rest of the developed world collapse the instant Americans actually stop overpaying and start sharing the pains with foreign single-payer systems.
English

@usukpp @XueJia24682 A home is any structure with a permanent roof, running water & electricity, wherever the occupant wants to live.
English

If you're willing to live in a high rise that's 750sqft and sold as a shell, as well as never legally owning your home.
In China, all land is technically owned by the state. Developers lease land (often for 70 years for residential use).
The biggest problem in the US for housing is your desire for single family homes and NIMBYs. It's zoning that is the major problem.
English

@atnissly NIMBY-fornia has good tax policies ONLY for long-term homeowners.
The rest of the populace just gets beaten up time after time.
English

Controversial take: taxes aren’t that bad in CA.
High earners pay ~$30-50k per year to the state.
Meanwhile, property taxes are some of the lowest in the country and increase by 2% per year even if you get appreciation or do a $1mm renovation.
Yes, houses are very expensive, but you can rent for half of NYC rates at rent control while you save.
When you do buy, you’re golden (no pun intended).
English

@SlopHq 20-20-20 service is the winner (busses or trains)
~20 minute service intervals from 6am to 6pm
~20 minutes total downtime (walking time + transfer time) each direction
~20 hours of operation each day
Price doesn't matter if the time losses are too large.

@SecScottBessent The @gop isn't going to win an election ever again.

Iran is the head of the snake for global terrorism, and through President Trump’s Operation Epic Fury, we are winning this critical fight at an even faster pace than anticipated. In response to Iran’s terrorist attacks against global energy infrastructure, the Trump Administration will continue to deploy America’s economic and military might to maximize the flow of energy to the world, strengthen global supply, and seek to ensure market stability.
Today, the Department of the Treasury is issuing a narrowly tailored, short-term authorization permitting the sale of Iranian oil currently stranded at sea.
At present, sanctioned Iranian oil is being hoarded by China on the cheap. By temporarily unlocking this existing supply for the world, the United States will quickly bring approximately 140 million barrels of oil to global markets, expanding the amount of worldwide energy and helping to relieve the temporary pressures on supply caused by Iran. In essence, we will be using the Iranian barrels against Tehran to keep the price down as we continue Operation Epic Fury.
This temporary, short-term authorization is strictly limited to oil that is already in transit and does not allow new purchases or production. Further, Iran will have difficulty accessing any revenue generated and the United States will continue to maintain maximum pressure on Iran and its ability to access the international financial system.
So far, the Trump Administration has been working to bring around 440 million additional barrels of oil to the global market, undercutting Iran’s ability to leverage its disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.
President Trump’s pro-energy agenda has driven U.S. oil and gas production to record levels, strengthening energy security and lowering fuel costs. Any short-term disruption now will ultimately translate into longer-term economic gains for Americans – because there is no prosperity without security.

@VanIAm1776 @cityaestheticss Very glad that CA is a place I only have to visit (not live).
English

@clearSNR @cityaestheticss Wait till I tell ya about living in California, with their compassionate terrible government. Police don't bother showing up for theft. Video doesn't matter.
English

@james_xond No... wages should be high enough that we can take 4 consecutive months off once per decade and have one adventure each in our 40s, 30s, 20s and even teenage years!
English

@Pcrawjr @cityaestheticss This is peak housing design:
1) Almost ZERO front yard... nothing hut a hedge.
2) The bulknof the outdoor space is in the BACK yard.
Need more. Lots more.
English

@cityaestheticss Better quality building but Belgium has many such houses like this on quiet streets or even cul de sacs

English

@VanIAm1776 @cityaestheticss The Surveillance State is rapidly solving this problem.
When every home has a bunch of Nest cameras recording every passerby, casual crime will become almost impossible because it will be captured on film from 4 different angles.
A next step is to crowdsource law enforcement.
English

@cityaestheticss The last thing I want is to live where anyone can get to my house via bus or bike. That's how you get crackheads and thieves in that nice cul de sac.
Duh.
English

@nycconservat @cityaestheticss How are bike lanes and public transport the problem?
English

@cityaestheticss You're missing the point.
THE POINT is that the kids can play less than 250 feet away from the house where mom & dad are cleaning, cooking, fixing cars and otherwise lounging.
Any plays pace with more than 3 walls between mom and the kids *does not* solve the problem.
English

@yFactr @SlopHq You're gonna have to write another 1500 words of internet slop to justify that assessment.
Almost every Land Speculators runs almost their whole lives upon the precept that their hoarded land needs to be left vacant "until I'm almost bankrupt" and then sell it off at top dollar!
English

@SlopHq Also a lot of the rhetoric sounds like boomers who don't understand marginal tax rates tbh, property taxes do not punish you for development
English

@yFactr @vikinick_ @SlopHq Yes.
Eliminate aesthetic zoning so that it's impossible to block new safe+durable land usage in every community.
English

@vikinick_ @SlopHq Relative to the equal overall revenue property tax counterfactual your property taxes go up much more under an LVT when your neighborhood gets better, creating a much stronger incentive to NIMBY
