Remember this well. I was a newly elected MP camping out in cheap digs wondering what on earth might happen next.

PM Carney: "Those whose politics is to destroy, to demolish, dismantle, they're not going to change their instincts. This is, in many respects, this is their moment. We can't match them by being timid imitations of them. We can't answer them by pining for an old order that's not going to return ... it can only be answered by positive action, by building that which comes next."

Government released detailed expenditure data today. Ireland’s yearly social welfare bill has exploded from €9bn to €43bn. That is a €34bn increase and a 370% surge. Even in the last 3 years alone it is up €6.4bn. This is completely out of control.

I understand that the fuel protests are a very emotive topic and tensions are running high, but there's no excuse for a abusing someone's family just for respectfully raising concerns. Some of the responses Cllr Shannon received to his post were crazy. independent.ie/regionals/wexf…

Corporate tax receipts are at record highs. Households are absorbing an energy price shock. A government that refuses to use the first to cushion the second isn't being prudent. It's being politically illiterate. And that view dominates Irish media commentary.

The inheritance tax system heavily favours those with children. In Ireland, inheritance tax can reach 33% once you go above certain tax-free thresholds, but those thresholds vary significantly depending on your relationship to the person. That means leaving a home to a child
