@cobaltspike

Doer of cool stuff sometimes. I enjoy scuba, backpacking, red teaming, and reverse engineering. Occasionally also radiation science, time science and EMS.

@kurmanov @NIST They have it! If you visit either the Boulder, CO or Gaithersburg, MD campus you can buy some. Lots of cool stuff like hoodies, beanies, coins, pens, mugs! This is some of my favorites :)

What’s that dried powder? It’s NIST’s domestic sludge SRM. Each bottle contains 40 grams of dried, pulverized domestic sludge. Scientists use the SRM to verify their measurements and calibrate their tests for detecting heavy metals (like lead) in their sludge samples.

@KMBK_ARKADIA And here are the biscuits. I can send you the recipe if you like. It was my grandmother’s recipe and the cast iron pan they’re in was hers also.

@PatrickHeizer NIST also maintains the National Time Service/Internet Time Service, which are how "radio controlled atomic clocks" get their time! The radio station in Ft. Collins CO (WWV/B) broadcasts HF time to the entire US. The internet time service also serves time to the entire planet :)

The NIST is a national treasure; we need more of everything they're working on. In addition to the stone wall test, they: -produced the standard peanut butter -actively manage and study a free-roaming deer herd on campus -invented a "quantum logic clock" that is 37x more accurate than the old international standard -are already working on post-quantum cryptography -have a clone of Issac Newton's apple on campus -operate one of the largest neutron research labs in the world -helped redefine the kilogram in 2019 Plus dozens and dozens of other projects.

Just learned that I work less than a mile from the longest-running stone weathering experiment: NIST's stone wall test. Built in 1948, it includes 2352 samples of stone from 47 US states and 16 countries, and uses two types of mortar.

@PatrickHeizer @szetoinsitu It is nearly back online! Worth mentioning it is not your average research reactor, it is one of only a few remaining HEU reactors in the US and it creates cold neutrons for experiments, imaging and other purposes. nist.gov/ncnr

I could say anything I wanted, smart or stupid, and no one cared Now I can post something I know about deeply and have PhDs and journalists call me stupid (they are wrong), or have guys with 96 IQs and a gambling problem call me stupid (no u). Or maybe a joke that gets misunderstood by hundreds of thousands of people and get called a moron by angry people across the world

@IVPvideos I got two of these (it looks like a pachislot machine) for $80 each two years ago. They're super fun and absolutely worth it especially if it comes with the key. You can convert them to use quarters too
