🧵 Agant has submitted its response to the FCA’s Consultation paper CP25/14 on stablecoin issuance and cryptoasset custody, and CP25/15 on a prudential regime for cryptoasset firms. We are grateful for the opportunity to contribute our views as the UK’s regulatory regime for stablecoins develops and evolves. The FCA has worked tirelessly to prepare a sensible, comprehensive regulatory regime. While many of the proposals are sensible, our responses make several significant comments and suggestions. Some are summarised below. 🧵⬇️

In a recent interview by Izabella Kaminska published by @politico, Agant co-founder Reuben Blamey makes a strong case for UK stablecoins: “We want to be like Circle and Tether - where we’re one of the biggest holders of U.K. government debt. That’s a positive thing for the government.” Agant is developing GBPA, a GBP stablecoin that aims to do more than simply enable on-chain settlement. It’s designed to support sovereign debt markets, reduce FX risk for UK corporates and could help to ensure that the country isn’t left behind in the digital financial era: “It’s a collateral instrument and a settlement instrument in Pound sterling, but the government benefits directly too”, Reuben points out in the article. In a global market dominated by dollar-backed stablecoins, European challengers like Agant as well as others such as Germany’s @AllUnityStable are pushing for regulator-backed alternatives - not just to build trust, but to preserve monetary sovereignty. As the U.S. moves ahead with new regulatory frameworks and faster market adoption, Agant is aiming to build a compliant, functional alternative that serves UK institutions 24/7, in their native currency, on public blockchains. The article points out that a digital Pound stablecoin isn’t just about innovation - it could also be a lifeline for the UK’s fiscal strategy in a rapidly shifting global order: “It’s an identity play. A sovereignty play. If we don’t have a European solution, we’ll have to accept what is provided to us. And that’s not a good idea”, Reuben concludes.
