I didn't pay my CPA for bookkeeping last year. I figured, "I'm early stage. I can handle this myself." I could not handle it myself. I had business expenses scattered across my personal card. (don't do that...) So I had to go through a YEAR of transactions to figure out which ones were business. Then update my spreadsheet. Then reconcile everything from my company accounts. Meanwhile my CPA kept emailing me. "Hey, can we check in?" "Do you have everything ready?" And I just stalled. Because I viewed my to-do list for my company a lot higher than my tax returns I guess. But when you don't pay someone else to do your books and you're prepping them for your CPA, everything matters. It needs to be clean and easy for them to understand. Otherwise you will be their LEAST favorite client and likely file late. Trust me on that one. 😉 So I was up until 2, 3am trying to make it all make sense. 🚨 This is why people let their accountants handle their bookkeeping!!! 🚨 I talk to bookkeepers literally every day for Sam's List. I know how much time they save founders. Pay them, it's worth it. What I do now: every month I go through my bank statements and update everything. I don't have late nights playing catch up anymore and now I'll be my CPAs favorite client. At least I hope! If you're past ~$300K in revenue and bookkeeping is eating 20%+ of your time, you can probably hand it off now. DM me if you want a short list of bookkeepers who work with founders.
