Today we remember Aaron Devlin, 10 years on. A gifted footballer, a loyal teammate, and a true friend to many. His smile, spirit and legacy still inspire. Our thoughts are with the Devlin family. Always remembered, always a Shamrock. ⚪🔵

After 26 incredible years I've decided to leave The Irish News at the end of the inter-county season. I couldn't have given it more - and The Irish News couldn't have given me more. It was a match made in heaven. For the next while, there's a bit more writing in me yet.

Canadian MP Laurel Collins: "Climate emergencies are not gender neutral. The degradation of ecosystems disproportionately impacts women and girls, and I am wildly emotional. This is the existential crisis of our time." 🤡 "We need to think about the intersection of gender and the climate crisis... We are facing a climate emergency."

We laid to rest the eldest of my siblings today. Our Rita was just a lovely, kind, considerate woman. Tonight's halo moon reminded me of her wide reaching warmth and eternal zest for life. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine – In the shelter of each other, people survive.

In our lineage, we have been reproducing sexually, with two and only two sexes, for at least 500 million years. It may be closer to 2 billion. Sex chromosomes evolved far more recently than that, in several lineages. These lineages include but are not limited to mammals and, separately, birds. In fact, there may be two separate evolutions of sex chromosomes in mammals alone, as the monotremes—the echidnas and the duck-billed platypus—have several pairs of sex chromosomes, whereas the rest of us—the metatherians (marsupials) and eutherians (placentals, which includes humans)—have just the one pair. Turtles—not just marine turtles, but all turtles, and a lot of other tetrapods too, in addition to all manner of other organisms—have sex that is both binary, and environmentally determined. There is no genotype associated with sex in such organisms. And yet individuals have a sex. It seems likely, from your comments here, that you are simply unaware of most of these facts. That's fine. Most people don't know these things. Most people do not, however, claim to know the *other* knowledge that is built on top, while not knowing the fundamentals, some of which I've laid out here. What you *are* surely aware of, however, is that any discussion of "what sex is" that limits itself to "what sex is in humans" is an anti-scientific and anti-evolutionary perspective. It is curious to me how you justify simultaneously being so utterly anti-scientific while throwing your weight around as a PhD in science.

Sex is binary. Binary means having two states. Hermaphroditic species reveal the sex binary: male into female, or vice versa, or both at once. Male, female: two states. Humans are no exceptions to the rules of biology, just because you don’t know what binary means…
Ian Copeland, PhD@IanCopeland5

Sex (like all traits) is not binary. Gender (which is a social construct ) is not binary. All traits are on a spectrum. Many species of fish change their sex regularly. Sex is no exception to the rules of biology, just because you are a bigot... bbcearth.com/news/fish-are-…

Ronan Devlin was an underage star who found the cliff edge after minor tough to cope with. He left Ballinderry for Moortown but came back in time to play one game with both Coilin and Aaron. How treasured that memory has become. Feature from today irishnews.com/sport/gaafootb…

We shouldn’t dismiss the culture war as a “distraction” or a “fringe issue”. There’s too much at stake. My thoughts from tonight’s episode of Free Speech Nation…
