ALL CHRISTIANS MUST REJECT ANTISEMITISM. Anyone who says that the Lord is not Jewish needs to study their scripture. Jesus was unequivocally Jewish according to the Bible. The New Testament repeatedly affirms His Jewish identity through lineage, birth, upbringing, religious practice, and self-identification. Here are the key scriptures: - Matthew 1:1 opens the New Testament with: “The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.” This traces His legal Jewish lineage through King David (tribe of Judah) and the patriarch Abraham. - Hebrews 7:14 states: “For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah.” (The term “Jew” derives from “Judah,” one of Jacob/Israel’s sons.) - Luke 1:32–33 records the angel Gabriel announcing to Mary that Jesus would receive “the throne of his father David” and “reign over the house of Jacob forever.” - John 4:22 has Jesus Himself identifying with the Jews when speaking to the Samaritan woman: “You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.” (He uses “we” to include Himself among the Jewish people.) - John 1:11 says: “He came to his own [the Jewish people], and his own people did not receive him.” Additional evidence includes Jesus’ circumcision on the eighth day (Luke 2:21), His observance of Jewish festivals like Passover (John 2:13), Tabernacles (John 7:2), and Hanukkah (John 10:22), His teaching in synagogues and the Temple, and His recognition as “King of the Jews” (Mark 15:2). Both His mother Mary and legal father Joseph were Jewish, and He lived fully under the Jewish Law (Galatians 4:4). Biblical teaching that antisemitism should not be tolerated The Bible never uses the modern word “antisemitism,” but it strongly condemns hatred of the Jewish people and commands blessing them. God’s covenant with Israel is everlasting, and harming or cursing them brings divine opposition. Key passages include: - Genesis 12:3 (God’s promise to Abraham, father of the Jewish people): “I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” This principle applies to the Jewish people as Abraham’s descendants. - Zechariah 2:8 (God speaking of Israel): “For thus said the Lord of hosts… he who touches you touches the apple of his eye.” Attacking the Jewish people is portrayed as attacking something precious to God Himself. - Romans 11:1–2, 17–18 (the apostle Paul, a Jew, writing to Gentile Christians): “Has God rejected his people [the Jews]? By no means! … But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing root of the olive tree, do not be arrogant toward the branches.” Paul warns Gentiles not to boast over or despise the Jewish “root” into which they have been grafted. - Romans 11:28–29: “As regards the gospel, they [the Jews] are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” Jesus’ own teachings reinforce this: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:39, quoting Leviticus 19:18) applies to all people, including Jews. The New Testament also condemns hatred in general (1 John 4:20: “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar”). While some New Testament verses have been tragically misused throughout history to justify antisemitism (e.g., John 8:44 or Matthew 27:25), those passages address specific first-century conflicts, not eternal ethnic hatred, and must be read in the full context of God’s unbreakable love for Israel. In short, the Bible presents Jesus as a Jew from the tribe of Judah, born into and fully part of the Jewish people, and it commands blessing rather than cursing Abraham’s descendants. Antisemitism directly contradicts these clear teachings. Christians (and anyone seeking to follow biblical truth) are called to reject it outright.
