Congratulations to @catkinson80 & @NatalieFleetMP as they take on important briefs covering DA & VAWG.
I look forward to working with both to ensure tackling DA is treated with the highest priority across govt, so we can better protect survivors & enable them to thrive.

Thank you to @wesstreeting @Jess4Lowestoft and Baroness Merron for joining my roundtable with people who have experienced DA yesterday.
Lots of practical solutions emerging to make our health system safer for victims and to better support their recovery.

📢 We welcome @CommissionerDA commitment and support for greater awareness and recognition of stalking within DARDRs.
Mandatory specialist stalking training for all chairs & panels must now follow, in consultation with stalking specialist experts.

Suicide is the leading cause of death DA victims, yet we are not seeing perps held accountable when it occurs.
More must be done to end the postcode lottery of investigation standards so more cases can then be pursued in the courts.

It's inexcusable that more is not being done to protect victims before it’s too late.
The police must check for DA & properly investigate when an unexpected death occurs & all agencies need to work together so we can hold perps to account & help victims. bit.ly/3R4edPw

Survivor voice is at the core of my work.
Last week, survivors shared their experience of navigating DA services and their ideas for change with ministers and my office.

Really good to spend some valuable time today with @CommissionerDA and the @LDNVictimsComm, talking through shared priorities and the issues that matter most to victims, including access to justice.

English

Getting the right help and support can be life-changing and lifesaving for people subject to DA.
Grateful to survivors for sharing their ideas for delivering good quality support and recovery services with @MoJGovUK, @ukhomeoffice & @educationgovuk at my roundtable this week.

I spoke to @LBCNews today about the importance of holding perps to account for domestic abuse related suicides following the conviction of Lee Milne in Scotland.
There's been lots of progress made, but too many families are left waiting for justice.

When we put children first in the Family Court, victims of DA feel more supported and re-traumatisation is reduced.
Thankful to Sir Andrew McFarlane for his advocacy for the Child Focused Court model during his time as President of the Family Division.

Attending court can be an incredibly anxious time for victims of domestic abuse. This funding is a positive step towards ensuring they feel confident on the process and get vital updates on their case, something survivors tell me they often don't receive.

Too many abused women end up in prison when they shouldn’t. The Women’s Justice Board recommendations are welcome & show how we can support women away from the justice system. Now over to govt to build on the funding today by implementing them in full.

Welcome the expansion of Op Soteria principles to courts, meaning rape trials will focus on the suspect's behaviour, not the victim's.
Also pleased to see new Independent Legal Advisor service for victims, giving them more support and advice in court.

I welcome any efforts to reduce court backlogs – long waits and delays leave many victims of DA with no confidence in justice ever being served.
Victims must also have access to specialist support as they navigate a complex & often traumatising system.

Excellent to see govt introducing a statutory definition of ‘honour’-based abuse.
This change will undoubtedly help people recognise the severity of this crime, raise awareness, and bring more perpetrators to justice.

No victim should have to face the trauma of chasing online platforms to remove intimate images shared without their consent.
Really welcome this action by govt to shift responsibility to platforms, and for bringing in strong consequences if they don’t.

No perpetrator should escape justice because we failed to look closely enough.
Agree with calls for police to investigate all suicides where DA is suspected, and for better training to understand the impact of coercive control on victims’ mental health.

With technology-facilitated abuse on the rise, we must do more to ensure perpetrators who weaponise these devices are held to account, while building in better safeguards to protect victims.
