Twitter friends with kids, please help me make a list of classic chapter books for reading to an imaginative 6yo. We’ve done Narnia, Borrowers, Faraway Tree & have Jungle Book & some Nesbit lined up. There’s so much rubbish out there, please suggest good stories we can both enjoy

They used to go to the neighbours for a bath. Otherwise it was a quick wash with water heated from the cold tap outside. Same for a phone call.

My grandparent’s house did not have running water, sanitation or phone. They had some basic electricity but no fridge or anything “fancy” like that.Granda died in 1998 not knowing what it was like to have such luxuries.Granny moved to a wee flat in 2000. Didn’t know herself.(1/2)

Every now and then, I realise I am one generation away from a world that, in certain regards, seems as remote as the Crusades. My mother tonight reminded me that, from rural Armagh, she was born into a house that had no electricity. And it didn't arrive until she was about 10.
