I sincerely hope that mine is just one of many portraits of Prime Ministers from both parties that will continue to be hung in the Parliament of Canada for decades and centuries to come […] but that will require that in these perilous times both parties whatever their differences, come together to preserve the independence and unity of this blessed land.

Prime Minister Carney’s remarks at Davos rose above the usual talking points. They were serious, disciplined, and unmistakably about Canada’s interests- not performative politics. I’m a partisan conservative. I believe in sovereignty, security, the rule of law, fiscal discipline, and earning our place in the world rather than assuming it. I’m also not interested in reflexive cynicism. When a Prime Minister articulates Canada’s purpose clearly on the world stage, and does it in a way that strengthens our credibility with allies and puts adversaries on notice- that matters. Do I agree with him on everything? No. I disagree, for example, with his framing on China given their closeness and open support to some of the world's worst actors. But I agree with much of what he said at Davos, and more importantly, I respect the frank, clear-eyed assessment behind it. Canada needs leaders who can name hard realities without flinching, and speak plainly about what our allies expect and what our competitors will exploit. This doesn’t mean a free pass at home. Accountability still applies. Debate still applies. Elections still apply. But in moments like this, grown-up countries close ranks around the national interest. Every Canadian should be able to support that, regardless of party, because Canada is bigger than our politics.

We can build walls or we can be more ambitious — and build something better, stronger, and more just.

Bottom line on tariffs: Liberals left us ill-equpped to fight a tariff war with @realDonaldTrump by recording the worst record of economic growth in their decade in power of any Cdn gov't since the Depression. Believing they're the best choice to get us out of this mess is absurd

Today’s delay buys time. It doesn’t end the threat. Canada needs a New National Policy of nation-building: dismantling internal barriers, welcoming investment, building new infrastructure, ending business-bashing and regulatory paralysis, and taking our resources to the world.
Perrin Beatty@PerrinBeatty

The tariff delay is good news, but we need more information about Mr. Trump’s Truth Social posting that the tariffs “will be paused for a 30 day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL”

Tonight in Montreal it appears protests have veered into lawlessness. I have consistently asked Mayors to advise police that criminal law & municipal bylaws need to be applied. Tolerating behaviour like this to avoid escalation emboldens those breaking the law & scares others.

I really wish politicians would stop saying “this isn’t who we are” when responding to racist or bigoted events. Apparently, this is exactly who “we” are and it’s appalling. There’s a vacuum of leadership that’s allowing this to go unchecked and because of that, it’s flourishing.

We need to be doing everything we can to turn Canada into the best place for entrepreneurs to build 🇨🇦 What's proposed in the federal budget will do the complete opposite. Innovators and entrepreneurs will suffer and their success will be penalized -- this is not a wealth tax, it's a tax on innovation and risk taking. Our policy failures are America's gains. At a time when our country is facing critically low productivity and business investment our political leaders are failing our country's entrepreneurs. Please start listening to the people in the arena.
