BREAKING: White House issues new policy that will require, by 2026, all federally-funded research results to be freely available to public without delay, ending longstanding ability of journals to paywall results for up to 1 year. Coverage coming on @ScienceInsider.

This graph in the new Lewis & Usmani article caught my eye because of its surprising results (countries with ⬆️ police have ⬇️ police killings) and its inconsistent denominators (per population vs. per homicides), so I wanted to replicate it. direct.mit.edu/ajle/article/d…

I asked #dalle for a painting titled “The Great Ship Fire” by a made-up artist, who I described as “widely regarded as the greatest painter in history.” Then I repeated the query but changed the description of the artist to “honestly not very good.”

As the monkeypox virus (MPX) outbreak continues, a lot of data emerging in real-time & being rapidly disseminated (as well as misinformation). I complied the unfolding scientific data (with direct links to papers and threads) on what we (don’t) know so far. #IDTwitter 🧵(1/n)

@sreenathc @CmonMattTHINK A 12x12 square wouldn't be big enough to contain such a circle; if the circle has diameter 15.5 the original square would need side length at least 15.5.

@CmonMattTHINK Perhaps in the case where the rectangle is a square of side 12 the semi circles become a circle….slice the circle and slide it keeping the top line tangent..it needs to move 3.5 to the left to get this picture…so the diameter is 15.5. Does this logic hold?

I can't tell how hard this problem I just made up is. 🙃 The two semicircles are congruent. The rectangle is 12x19. What's the diameter of the semicircles?

@Grey_Monroe @jgschraiber Yes — that's why probability and statistics are so necessary for biology. Uncertainty is inherent in the processes we model, and there's measurement noise on top of that. We can model a non-deterministic quantity (or one we have uncertainty about) as a random variable.
