Today, we made history in San Juan County. The first blast at @MarianaMinerals Copper One marks a return to building the materials that power American strength and security. Global copper demand could outstrip supply as soon as 2027. By 2050, we may need to produce as much copper as has been mined in all of human history to power energy, communications, and transportation. For too long, America outsourced the materials that power our future. Today, Utah is helping bring them back. Projects like Copper One create real opportunity in rural Utah, and help ensure we’re not dependent on adversaries for the resources that drive our economy and defend our nation. @cook82291 @MattZeitlin I'm not exactly sure, but one thing that kept coming up in discussion in that for some uses (training for AI models) latency was not a big deal, while for others (internet connection, AI inference) it was much more important.

i do wonder how much of loudon's ability to get a good deal from data center developers is that its attractive to data center developers for reasons other than "there's land here" and so can drive a harder bargain

@TheWapplehouse It has an egress window. Fire code requires an additional ground floor exit. Better question is why bother with a back yard, but most of these are probably built to get additions or ADUs over time

No back door is insane. My neighbor escaped their house burning down through the back door because the front of the house was on fire. This design is an easily preventable death trap.

@judgeglock @MattZeitlin Do you know how operators choose low-latency spots as opposed to say, the Utah desert? Does this depend on the company, or does each operator tend to have a chain of data centers for different service priorities?

@MattZeitlin Definitely. The agglomeration effects of data centers are real, mainly in low latency, and Loudoun’s history, going back to AOL and Worldcom, of having early fiber lines and early centers really helped it.

I think Americans struggle to move on from high school because the country is especially isolating, and high school or college were the last times many people were among a big social network on a daily basis. Car dependency & housing constraints hinder that in adulthood

@LeahLibresco @dodgeblake But the claim that finances bear no responsibility is wrong. Greater earning power increases the opportunity cost of kids, but lower living expenses don't. Hence the Couillard paper from last year linking constrained housing to smaller families:

When earning power and prosperity go up, two things happen:
-Kids DO become more affordable
BUT
-The opportunity cost of kids (in foregone wages/leisure) also goes up

I am so over this completely dominant and unchallenged lie. Finances 👏 aren't 👏 responsible👏 for 👏 the 👏 fertility 👏 crisis 👏. That's why, even in countries (Denmark) with extremely generous social support, including state-sponsored IVF, the fertility rate is still pitiful. Some of the fertility decline is because teenagers aren't having as many kids anymore. That's great. But another category of affluent, mature couples — across Western affluent countries — are CHOOSING "double income no kids" (DINK) lifestyles. Or believing the lie that they can wait until their late 30s, come to find out, after failed fertility treatments wreck their marriage and their savings, that it's too late. You don't have to blame individuals and their individual choices to see that the pattern *itself* is symptomatic of sad, damaging, individualistic, striver-y cultural rot.

This should be a passenger rail line. There’s no need for freight to go through the middle of downtown anymore.
It’s actually terrifying to think about how bad this would be if it was hazardous material freight.
