I would give RJ and Manny a chance. I also would give them the full autonomy to run the team the way they see fit with the understanding that they get a few years to get things in order. No more one year and done type of hiring. They were the Calder Cup Champions for a reason, ability to find players with so many injuries and keeping afloat. I'd give them 4 years with 4th year being the almost made the playoff then I'd give them extra year, the 5th year to see if there's some improvement and getting over the hump.

@Ominousflames @taj1944 Well, they have not tanked at all when they had a chance in the previous years. They even made some effort but they just lacked talents. From 2016-2025, they haven't even tank and they just keep on winning games during garbage time, ending up hurting their draft position.

@taj1944 You should probably read the replies in said post and find out it's actually a joke. If anyone is intentionally tanking, it's the Canucks. The players just don't try at all. But it's ok, the hockey gods will see that and make them drop to 3rd.

I created a proposal where 62 games season then a top 16 go on to play another 30 games vs the top 16 teams then top 8 would make the playoffs. Three different type of seasons within a year, regular season, middle season and post season. The bottom 16 teams would then be eliminated from the middle season but still play 20 more games to determine a draft position and wipe the slate clean. This will encourage teams not to tank but actually trade for something they need. The start of middle season is the trade deadline. This will eliminate a lottery. Each segment get a clean slate and start at 0-0 for every team. I would personally eliminate a pre-season and give each team a 3 weeks training camp instead.

@coolboarder80 @LeoPettersson6 Eliminate preseason, 93 game schedule; everyone plays everyone 3x. Extra home game goes to whichever conference wins the previous All-Star Game (or rotate yearly). top 16 to the playoffs, first tie breaker in standings is who won the 3 game regular season series.

You need a lot of depth to withstand the injuries. Didn't we learn that one injury to top 6 has doomed the season like we experienced last season? To that lesson, we need to build depth, and be patience. Keep those extra picks and it will turn out to be even better with lots of depth in the future.

So is this the main reason why the Canucks organization doesn't want any rebuild of any kind from this one example of fans spending their money elsewhere? This is the reason why we couldn't even embrace a true rebuild strategy that other teams are able to do by tanking on purpose? We are truly spoiled with winning/mediocre and not embracing the rebuild when it is badly needed in the organization. This proves the owner's philosophy of never embrace any rebuild for their bottom line: it's the playoff or else philosophy where the roster moves reflect this. This type of behavior by the owner's fear enables them to avoid the rebuild altogether by keeping veterans that go nowhere while we badly needed young blood infusing the organization.

Yes, but with agreement that a new coach will be given a longer leash of at least two-three seasons. I prefer to hire Manny to coach and he should be given a shot to run from the bench. He is a proven coach that led them to Calder Cup Champions with much lesser talent. I don't want to lose him elsewhere. Foote is not what I want, I mean, he hasn't proven that he is capable to coach since he has tried that gig in junior league and is widely unsuccessful. He got this job unmerited because of Tocchet.

@IcyVert The best coach would be innovator of the game and they couldn't come up with some ideas that might work? Scotty Bowman would be an example of it but wouldn't be necessarily work on modern game because of the rules changing every year.

There was no sign of swinging strike by pointing it out that he swung, he simply called it strike with normal looking strike, not calling it a swinging strike whenever a batter tried to check swing. That is dishonest umpiring. He is covering himself by claiming that. Maybe it is time for MLB to allow for a check swing challenge if he claimed that he swung with ABS challenge and if he's wrong, then go with ABS to see if he caught the strike zone. Two reviews at once.

I think that you want an accurate count, like for example, if you are 2-1, you are able to hit more than 1-2 with pitcher having so much advantage and could throw a junk ball getting you swing at it. If you are able to get an accurate count early is the key. Umpire has always historically giving calls based on reputation, not what it is presented to them. If an umpire is giving a team with HOF reputation will always give them more leeway calls than an average team with bad reputation will get them undeserved calls. It will skew the stats of a players when it comes to a pay day. If a batter is able to hold off a bad pitch but umpire is still calling a strike regardless of a great judge of the eyes. That is why I feel that 2 challenges per plate appearance is the way to go with the technology.

@DecDitko75 @UmpireAuditor After seeing catchers ability to nail this almost at 100% rate, I think batters should get two challenges per PA and catcher/pitcher get three per game. It is harder for a batter to judge a ball at 0.1 of inch strike calls would have been a ball than the catcher.

The ABS calls create a mini-drama where the entire stadium and viewing audience is focused on the result. For radio it creates a small dead air pause while the system shows the result. It’s great entertainment. Watch for player challenge stats to become commonplace. Catchers and batters can be rated on their challenge record. And the system works seamlessly and fast. I’ve long been a proponent of doing a better job of getting the calls right. I think @mlb has developed a system that gets us as close to perfect as possible while keeping human umps part of the process.

It doesn't take long, 10 seconds and it is still faster than the pre-pitch clock era if you challenge like 20 times a game. Before the pitch clock ever became a thing, batters would take his sweet time every time he steps out of the box, wasting more times so I don't really think that 2 challenges per PA is a bad thing.

You had a real ownership with the team via the captaincy and yet you don't know anyone on the team, that is telling on how you led the team. It is not by the play itself but how you encourage others with words also matters. You can lead by examples without words, it is not a real team. Leading involves both words and actions. Sid Crosby is a good example, he leads by getting know of every players that walks in the locker room and showing his example of his work ethics. I could tell because the way he talked with Brock Boeser at the all-stars skill competition during his rookie year.

Even if the Canucks secure its top pick, no guarantee that they would sign McKeena because he is in NCAA and could always go back for its second season and the Canucks still benefits with that decision. No 9-game stint is allowed, it's either NCAA or pro hockey. It is all depends on how McKeena feels.

Here's the wild thing, Mike. The Canucks can just.... continue to tank! I know for both franchises that is a foreign concept, but the Canucks could just decide to accumulate more top picks in future drafts. If you genuinely think that McKenna or Stenberg alone would signify the end of the Canucks or Flames rebuild, then you simply do not know what you're talking about.

You still need to fire Foote even it makes us look bad as an organization. It's like you hiring an employee for a company and he underperforms the expectation needs to be let go to save the company's reputation. Coach does have a big impact on the decision-making for his players, how he establishes the system reflect this. Barry Tortz is a good example of a coach, Nashville used to not having their superstars but still in a contending for a playoff spot every year is because of how he coached the team, the strategy he used that really frustrated the opposition despite of that. Foote had Hughes and they still end up in 32nd place in time of the trade. Where does we go from here? Hire a coach with no expectation at all during the rebuilding. Foote had his expectation and still failed. They were supposed to be the bubble playoff team based on how they finished last season and they fell off the cliff after a good start to the season. Even with the full of injuries, Foote couldn't even show his forte with withstanding those adversity even with all of his players getting healthy and they still lose games. In theory, they were supposed to win games when they got healthy and didn't is telling.

Elliotte: People talking about firing Foote after a season. I think it's crazy. If you do stuff like that, it makes you look horrible as an organization. (Kyper & Bourne) Couldn't agree with Elliotte more. Outrageous this is even a discussion. Foote should have a statue built.

The NHL has had the opportunity to reduce games but instead, they increase it with this CBA agreement. If I were them, I would reduce it by 6 games and scrap the extra conference games from 3 games to 2 games and still be balanced schedule with 4-2 schedule matrix and scrap the Wild Card with this schedule matrix, or go with 4 teams with 8 divisions format with 8-2 schedule matrix and it would still be perfect 80 games season. I would be in favor of scrapping conference in both format altogether. The bottom line is that the season is already too long even with 82-games and soon to be 84 games.

Three weeks to go in the NHL's regular season, which wraps up Thursday, April 16. The NHL is still working on next season's schedule but my understanding currently is that the regular season will drop the puck on Sept. 29 and wrap up April 10. Subject to change, but that's the current plan. And as per new CBA, going to 84 games per team.

No, we don't need 21+ challenges per team — that would be ridiculous. The idea behind allowing 2 ABS challenges per plate appearance for the batter is to give them a fair shot at accurate calls early in the count. You don't want a batter at a real disadvantage just because a pitcher has a reputation for painting the edges. At least this gives him a fighting chance to stay alive and get a hit. Before the pitch clock, batters who disagreed with a call would often take their sweet time gathering their thoughts, stepping out, and resetting. So in the pitch clock era, I don't see a big issue with giving batters 2 quick ABS challenges per plate appearance. That said, I'd prefer keeping 3 separate challenges per game for the pitcher/catcher. They have the best view from behind the plate — better than the ump or batter ever will. Limiting them to 3 prevents abuse and wasted time, since catchers are usually spot-on. Batters don't have that luxury because of how subtle some pitches break. If a batter burns his challenges early and gets it wrong, he's at the mercy of the ump on strike three. That feels like a fair balance. We finally have the technology to make strike zone calls reflect real talent (eye/hand coordination) instead of human error. Even with my proposal — 2 batter challenges per plate appearance + 3 for the defense per game — games would still be faster than the pre-pitch clock era. Estimated added time: • Average ABS challenge: ~13.8–15 seconds (super quick automated graphic, no NY review). • At 10–15 total challenges: +2.3–3.8 minutes per game. •At 20–25 challenges: +4.6–6.25 minutes. The pitch clock (15s empty, 18s with runners) still enforces fast resets. Pre-clock, time between pitches was often 18–24+ seconds with all the dawdling. Pitch clock already cut average game times by ~20–30 minutes. Even with extra challenges, we'd stay way ahead of the old slow pace.

@coolboarder80 @AndrewA2z @CodifyBaseball No, we don't. This system so far has actually been pretty good, and I was skeptical of it originally. Either this is what we get, and that'll definitely be fine, or they go full ABS system. We don't need 21+ available challenges for each team. That's just ridiculous.
