@onepunchlinux @kmett @graninas @jacob_tan_en You’re not inviting actual discussion when you casually dismiss the other side as “hysterical.” Ironic when you then go on to completely mischaracterize the causes. I’ll stop engaging now.

@copumpkin @kmett @graninas @jacob_tan_en Sure, but if we thought through the pandemic rationally like we do with Haskell issues we would be able to recognize tradeoffs and causes differently than the hysterical. For example the scarcity of hospital beds is more to do with governors of states limiting hospitals.

Honestly, I don't see any reason to continue serving the Haskell community anymore. There are numerous issues within the community that discourage me. Today, I'll tell you why Haskell lacks a proper merit principle for individuals like myself. I have been working with Haskell for over 12 years, and my most significant contribution is undoubtedly my advanced books. It took more than 6 years of hard work (since 2015) to write them and unveil many hidden paths. Anyone who has attempted to write a book knows how challenging it can be. Despite that, I dared to openly express opinions on Haskell that contradicted widely supported narratives. Yes, there are many Haskellers who respect both my work and my opinions, even if they disagree. I am glad if my work has helped them in some way, and I am always open to discussions and debates. However, many other haskellers refuse to tolerate my opinions and even reject the idea that I could be 100% right on certain topics. In their eyes, my dissent devalues all the actual results I have contributed to the community. My opinions do not align with the agenda, which automatically classifies me as a second-class citizen. In the community, narratives matter more than accomplishments. Aligning with the dominant narratives earns you respect and grants significance to all your results, regardless of their quality or impact. You will receive support and praise, and be welcomed and encouraged to do more. Initially, it may seem like the merit principle is at work, but it truly only applies if you are in the right tribe, meaning you express the accepted system of values. However, if your opinions (just words) happen to contradict the narratives, neither your real results (actual contributions) will hold much weight in this community. The chance of receiving support is low, while the chance of being personally attacked and harshly criticized is high. What's worse, observers will passionately applaud this holy crusade against you. I know what I'm talking about; I have experienced this numerous times. It doesn't matter if you have accomplished something extraordinary, or if you have addressed a genuine need within the community. A haskeller aligned with the main narrative would rather die of thirst than accept water from someone with 'wrong' opinions. The merit principle, therefore, is very selective in the community, which essentially means it is no longer a merit principle at all. This is undoubtedly one of the significant obstacles hindering the adoption of Haskell in the industry. Individuals like me cannot naturally flourish within the community, and we refuse to engage in these games. The backlash against inconvenient opinions is not worth the effort of trying to do something meaningful. And, of course, expressing this opinion will bring more trouble than good upon myself. I could simply be silenced. I could even attempt to mimic the main Haskell narrative and gain reputation points. However, I believe in the truth of what I say. Vocalizing inconvenient truths is crucial. It's not a mystery to me why I am doing this. The only thing that puzzles me is why I am still writing another advanced book on Haskell. There is actually no point in doing so, only a tremendous struggle and a lack of proper respect in the future.

@onepunchlinux @kmett @graninas @jacob_tan_en Yes, when we’re arguing about whether you need a Monoid or a Semigroup for that typeclass, one of us being confidently wrong isn’t costing lives and harming the medical system and professionals working in it

@copumpkin @kmett @graninas @jacob_tan_en This is a bit of a strawman. The majority of haskellers have well reasoned arguments. Also most haskellers can handle disagreements about PLT itself. It seems in the last few years less well reasoned political views are causing rifts.

@onepunchlinux @kmett @graninas @jacob_tan_en Just think about how much nuance goes into arguing against a stance like that. And how many differing opinions like “ruby is right” exist in our field. Then, forgetting all that, go out into other fields, come across their blog posts, and decide we’re the free thinkers

@onepunchlinux @kmett @graninas @jacob_tan_en It’s a shame that self-professed intellectuals have such trouble seeing beyond their own scope of expertise. Imagine how frustrated you’d be to have an MD/MPH show up and say “types? I read five blog posts and a research paper that said ruby and OO is the future. Prove me wrong”

Not a huge fan of the title, but @ramit’s show on Netflix is otherwise awesome and most people would benefit from watching it

The AWS CLI (v2.12.0+) can be used to create a tunnel to connect to RDS DBs now, but I created a tool that tries to make it more convenient. 1. Create EIC endpoint 2. Download tool 3. Run `rdsconn p` 4. Run `psql -h 127.0.0.1 ...` github.com/aidansteele/rd…

Someday there will be a movie about the Trump events and those of us who experienced them will hate it because it reminds us, and others will hate it because it’s too absurd to be a credible movie plot

"Shiny Happy People" is horrific. No other way to describe it. Whatever you've heard of the Duggar Family, I promise it's so much worse. And exceptional timing for this documentary to drop while evangelical extremists stir an anti-LGBTQ moral panic. Massive content warning.

Can’t wait for all this fancy AI LLM stuff to finally stop autocorrect from fixing my correct usage of “it’s” and “its”. Also, iOS, I never intend to write “ducking”
