Went for a walk on my birthday to remember all that has been & to reflect on dreams yet to be fulfilled, work yet to be done None of us know what's around the corner or what the future holds But let's give life our best shot for the sake of all creation and our beautiful world
@KWTWeather Thanks Dave. Been in Bude with cousins Today One down on hols had shorts and tee shirt!😀😀 nice weather but not that warm! But will let him off as on hols!😀😀
Good afternoon everyone,
Here’s the latest temperature check from right across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly this afternoon, and it’s turning into a rather lovely spring day out there.
In fact, a few spots are coming in slightly warmer than some of yesterday’s weather models suggested, by around 2°C higher in places, which just goes to show that spring can still throw in the odd little surprise. Across the county and out across the islands, temperatures are currently ranging from a pleasant 13°C in some coastal and sea-breeze affected spots, up to a very warm 23°C in the more sheltered inland areas. Not bad at all for early April, and I’m sure a few gardens, beaches, and pub beer gardens are suddenly looking much more tempting this afternoon.
Of course, whenever we get a little burst of warmth like this, the headlines don’t take long to dust off the old phrases “mini heatwave” and “heat blast.” It happens every year, doesn’t it? A couple of warm afternoons and suddenly half the internet is acting like Cornwall has drifted south and joined the Mediterranean.
But officially, it only counts as a heatwave when temperatures reach or exceed the regional threshold for at least three consecutive days. Here in Cornwall, that threshold sits at 25°C, so while today is certainly warm and very pleasant, we’re not quite in official heatwave territory just yet. Think of it more as spring giving us a cheeky preview trailer for summer.
The other thing that sneaks up on people at this time of year is the UV. Because it’s still early spring, it’s easy to underestimate just how strong the sun can already be. Even with a bit of haze in the sky, UV levels are now climbing enough to catch people out, especially if you’re spending a few hours outdoors, heading to the coast, doing the garden, or simply enjoying the sunshine with a cuppa and convincing yourself it’s too early in the year for sun cream.
Sadly, the sun does not care what month it is.
So while it’s lovely to enjoy the warmer feel this afternoon, it’s well worth remembering sunglasses, a bit of sunscreen, and maybe not going full “first day of summer shorts and no shade” for too long.
A lovely taste of warmer days ahead, and certainly one to enjoy while it lasts before Cornwall reminds us it’s still only spring.
More updates soon,
KWT Dave.
Me in my 20s sleeping at a friend’s house: “Don’t worry that you haven’t got a spare bed, I will sleep in my clothes on the kitchen floor or in the bath or folded into a cupboard or in the big bush outside your front door or in a bin”
Me in my 40s: “Thank you for the offer of a spare bed, but I’m going to drive three hours home to my own one instead”
