I told my dad about the conspiracy stream I’m doing on the 16th. He’s a flat earther. He got excited and has been sending me non stop conspiracy theory videos. The messages keep flooding in. My phone gives me pings of dread. Send the marines. No, send Adam driver. help.

I bowed at TSA. It was automatic. My body did it before my brain arrived. The agent froze. His name tag said RODRIGUEZ. He looked at me. Looked at my boarding pass. Looked at me again. Then he bowed back. Not a small bow. A full bow. The woman behind me in line whispered, "Did we start doing that now?" She bowed too. The guy with the Dallas Cowboys cooler bowed. A teenager bowed while still holding his phone at chest height. Rodriguez straightened up and said, very professionally: "Sir. That was excellent form." He stamped my boarding pass. He did not stamp it the normal way. He wrote something in the margin with a Sharpie. I could not read it upside down. The line behind me had become a quiet bowing procession. A TSA supervisor walked over. I thought I was going to jail. She bowed. "Welcome to Texas, sir." At the gate I finally looked at my boarding pass. In the margin, in block letters: EXEMPLARY TRAVELER Rodriguez had also drawn a tiny star. I did not ask for this. Texas gave it to me anyway.

Pro-tip from a gundealer: Let's talk selling guns to a gun dealer. First off, don't do it. You're going to get hosed. I say this as a dealer who regularly buys guns. When people sell to me they are getting screwed on the value of the gun. I'm at least honest and transparent about it, many dealers are not. That being said, there are definite advantages to selling to a dealer: we are safe, there is a much more concrete paper trail away from you (this doesn't really matter in most states, but it does make many feel more comfortable) and we are quick/easy. Secondly, before you do anything else, clean your gun. If you bring a gun in looking like trash, I am going to price it accordingly. Why? Because until I take it apart to clean it, I have no idea what is underneath. Additionally, I'm going to have to spend time cleaning it before putting it out there. I will nearly always give more for clean guns than I will for dirty ones. Third, know what to expect on values. Do a bit of homework before you go in. The more educated you are about the pricing, the better. This is important on several levels: it helps protect you from an unscrupulous dealer and we generally prefer to work with someone that knows what they have. The corollary to that is be realistic on what you expect. We will generally pay between 40-60% of what a gun is worth. Accessories are lower than that. The spread depends on a lot of things, namely how quickly do we think we will move a gun. A nice Glock Gen5 rolls in, I'll probably give a full 60% of the value to it. If someone tries to make me buy another Heritage 22lr (I have like five in store right now) I'm going to be under 40%. Something that many don't realize is that used gun values actually fluctuate throughout the year. Summer is the bad season for the industry and prices are deflated right now. I may pay 10-15% more for a given gun in September than will in July. All of this to say, if you need to sell a gun quickly, a dealer is a quick resource but we aren't going to pay full value on guns.

Guy told me "Shotguns are great for home defense because you don't have to aim one." He clearly has never fired a shotgun. I hate it in a movie when someone fires a shotgun from a few yards away and multiple bad guys go flying, or a whole wall is peppered with pellet squibs. If someone is actually INSIDE your house, you have to point it directly at him. He's too close for a spread to "catch him". On the other hand, a shotgun has the major advantage that it won't penetrate your wall and hit your neighbor (unless you use buckshot - and even then you're better off than if you'd fired a rifle). Plus the shotgun is purely lethal to the loser who invaded your house, ensuring he won't carry on his foul deeds. Look at the table below. Even with a cylinder bore, a guy 10 yards away is only a 19" spread. You need to aim shotguns. When I went for my Rifle & Shotgun Shooting merit badge in Scouts I did okay with rifles but I think out of like 20 clay pigeons I only hit 1 with a shotgun. It was tough.
