As usual, I believe some people have cleaned their camera lenses, eagerly waiting to capture images of the moon tonight and perhaps begin their usual remarks about this moon not being a first crescent. Unfortunately, I have bad news: the crescent will still not be visible to the naked eye this evening in Nigeria bi izinillah . This is because the moon's age will be just over 16 hours, and a crescent is typically easily visible with the naked eye when it reaches 18 hours or more. Additionally, the moon’s illumination will be less than 0.5%. Even in Niger Republic and Mali, where sightings of the crescent were claimed yesterday, it will not be visible today. The crescent should be easily visible to the naked eye tomorrow, Friday, In shaa Allah because it will be about 40hrs old by sunset in Nigeria . Allah has made it possible for us to understand the movements of the sun and moon, as evidenced by many verses in the Quran. Allah stated in the Quran: Surah Ar-Rahman (55:5) states: "The sun and the moon move along their computed courses" (or follow a precise calculation). This verse highlights the perfect, ordained, and punctual motion of the celestial bodies as a sign of Allah’s mercy, power, and precise design in the universe, emphasizing order, consistency, and divine regulation. Allahu a’alaam!!!

The Crescent Council of Canada is aware of reported sightings in Afghanistan, Mali and Nigeria however is of the view that those are sightings of the waning crescent not the new crescent hence will not be accepting those reports.

I want to share a story. I have probably only told one or two people before. It was 2019. I was building Nord, I owned 100% at this time, and I had to go to China because some of our important suppliers needed to see me and discuss the way forward. I had spent months selling my dream to them, yet there was still no significant order. I had to fly to China to buy more time. However, I did not have enough money. I was very low on cash. Yet I knew that if I did not go on that trip, the suppliers would see me as unserious and the company would slowly just collapse. I have a good friend who has always been inspired by what I do and my accomplishments. He expressed interest in investing in Nord and I suggested that we visit the suppliers in China together. My plan was simple. I would pay for my flight and we would share a room where he would cover most of the room cost, while I showed him what we could do with our supply chain. He lives in London and I live in Nigeria. We were supposed to fly and land almost at the same time, although he was scheduled to arrive a few hours before me. A few hours before his flight, he called me to say he could not make it because of a logistical mix up. He told me last year, in 2025, that he actually had a serious medical emergency and might have died if he had not been in the UK where he was comfortable and had access to care. At the time, I did not know this. He did not tell me it was that serious. I simply felt he had abandoned me once the scale of the investment became obvious to him. Still, I was kind on the phone and told him it was okay. He remembered that. My already difficult but important trip suddenly became much more difficult, but I knew I still had to go. I flew to China and landed alone. We had initially planned to stay in a $100 per night room which we would share. Of course, I could not stay in a $100 per night room with my budget anymore, so I told my Chinese partner and friend to find me a really cheap hotel that was still close to town. He took me to one hotel that had a horrible smell. It was going for $25 per night. I was going to take it until I saw that the toilet was a pit toilet. I said, “No, e never bad like this.” I asked him to find me a hotel with a normal toilet. He took me to another one. The smell was ok, it looked neat, and it had a normal WC. It was $40 per night. I took it. I stayed a few days in Guangzhou, then took trains to other cities where my suppliers were located, staying in hotels that cost about $35 to $40 per night. A few days before my return, I had to visit an important supplier in a city that required a flight. I had to call Nigeria and asked that they send me some change I put somewhere. I think about $150 was sent through Western U. I used it to buy the flight ticket, attended the meeting, and then returned to Guangzhou for the last two days. When I landed back in Guangzhou, I had almost no money left. I probably had the equivalent of about $5. It could not buy anything meaningful, but I kept it just to convince myself mentally that I was not completely at zero. Psychologically, I was very low. The hotel had complimentary breakfast. That was what I would eat in the morning, and then I would go the entire day without eating. I would drink water all day and go for my meetings while my Chinese friend drove me around. He did not know I was that low on cash. Some days we would get complimentary lunch from the suppliers we visited. On other days, we did not. I just maintained an outward positive attitude even though I was tired and hungry, honestly I was just waiting for the day of my flight so I could finally return to Nigeria. On the day of the flight, my friend found a way to get me to the airport (that is a story for another day, as that was the day he suspected I was really low on cash). As usual, I had eaten only breakfast, and the flight was at 00:50 am. I was hungry and tired, I could not buy anything while we waited to board.

As I entered the plane, I asked the air hostess for some juice because I felt like I might collapse. I drank the juice, and a few hours later the meals were served. Eventually, I landed in Nigeria via Dubai. I remembered this story recently because of the situation in the Middle East. I began to think about what would have happened if, at that time, I was stranded in Guangzhou with almost no money, just waiting to finish my meetings and catch my Emirates flight back to Nigeria, only to hear that flights had been cancelled because a war had started. It would have been devastating. I honestly do not even want to imagine how much that could have affected me at that time. May God never give us more tribulations than our capacity can handle. Today, although I am in Nigeria, I am supposed to travel to China this weekend with five members of my team. We had booked Qatar Airways, but since Qatar could not go, I simply told the team to book all of us on another airline. We have come a long way, God is great.

A very beautiful and thoughtful thread, jazakallahu khairan. Detection by IR/CCD systems at or immediately following conjunction is not the actual crescent . These devices identify thermal differences and produce processed signals, rather than capturing a visible crescent that can be seen by the human eye. Even the images they generate are reconstructed from data, not true optical crescents. Therefore, such detections cannot be equated with the sharia sighting as referenced in tradition. Therefore, my personal opinion is that the scholars in Saudi Arabia do not completely understand how the CCD camera functions; they often believe it is the same as a telescope. I asked this question when I was at the center in Makkah, but I did not receive an answer. Allahu a’alaam.

Re: Moonsighting Fiasco [February 17/18, 2026!] By now, it should be clear that lunar observatories in most Middle Eastern countries rely on infrared (IR) imaging to detect the crescent within the IR-spectrum during the day (see: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Libya, Bahrain, and Jordan: x.com/MuslimBiblioph…). Unlike visible spectrum sighting, IR enables daytime detection, even at the moment of conjunction. This technique was famously demonstrated by the 2013 daytime IR crescent from France (a method since adopted across the Gulf): astrophoto.fr/new_moon_2013j…. This methodology was further confirmed by Br. Simwal (of the National Moonsighting Committee of Nigeria: x.com/Simwal/status/…). While I haven’t yet found a public press release showing an IR crescent image from February 17 (they seem to have released it for the following morning! link above), the underlying technical capability is well-established. It is important to note that the infrared/IR spectrum (thermal radiation) is invisible to the naked eye and requires specialized sensors. By using this method, one can observe an "IR crescent" on the day of conjunction without fail, even with a separation of only 1°. Sufficient image processing, integration time, and denoising can yield a detection (because IR scatters less than visible light, Rayleigh scattering: I_scatter ~ 1/lambda^4). This explains why Saudi Arabia consistently announces sightings despite visibility plots suggesting otherwise; their reports align with the pre-calculated Umm Al-Qura calendar (ummalquracalendar.com), which is based on conjunction rather than optical visibility. That being said, a lot of people miss this, but in astronomy, certain phenomena are deterministic and can be calculated with extreme precision (years in advance): 1. Sunset and sunrise 2. Moonset and moonrise 3. Solar and lunar orbital motions 4. Solar zenith and conjunction However, other phenomena are probabilistic and require empirical confirmation; the primary example is the first visibility of the crescent moon. (Other phenomena, like the onset of Fajr or Isha, are also probabilistic but tend to gain certainty over time.) So, while visibility plots (webspace.science.uu.nl/~gent0113/isla…) and sunset/moonset timings (x.com/MuslimBiblioph…) can be used to rule out impossible reports, the mere presence of a "visibility band" over a geographic location does not guarantee a sighting; it still requires human confirmation. Furthermore, these visibility bands are often misunderstood because the map itself represents a spherical Earth projected onto a flat plane, often viewed through the narrow window of UTC or the International Date Line (which is arbitrary: see 1/ and 2/ x.com/MuslimBiblioph… ). Consequently, it is scientifically inaccurate to claim that a sighting in one location automatically begins the new month for all "global sighting" adherents within a UTC/International window. A more physics-based approach would be that only locations/timezones west of the confirmed sighting, within that probabilistic band, can validly invoke a global sighting (harmonizing both local and global). Advocates of Global sighting should recognize that medieval scholars' opinions on global sighting did not account for the scope of the globe, time zones, etc. So scholars should not lazily juxtapose traditional global sighting opinions without factoring in the physics mentioned above. So, while these nuances could be factored into modern calculations, the science is often misapplied by calculation advocates to force alignment with the Umm Al-Qura calendar. For example, the ISNA calculation method dictates that if a conjunction occurs anywhere in the world before 12:00 UTC and there is a possibility of a sighting (x.com/MuslimBiblioph…), as was the case this year - it was over the Pacific Ocean in the Feb. 17 UTC window, they will declare the new month (webspace.science.uu.nl/~gent0113/isla…). These arbitrary rules conveniently sync the ISNA calendar with Saudi Arabia’s IR-based sightings and Umm Al-Qura conjunction-based calendar. This also explains why ISNA/Saudi calendars line up all the time! This creates immense social pressure for Muslims and Crescent committees who follow either global or local naked-eye sightings. Every year, a discrepancy arises: 1. Ramadan begins on a different day, but Eids align (e.g., 2026). 2. Ramadan begins together, but the Eids diverge (e.g., 2025). Therefore, I advocate for a scientifically grounded approach that remains in line with normative Sunni tradition. What we are seeing now is a misapplication of science. We are essentially repeating the shift the Jewish community made during the post-Second Temple period under Hillel II: moving toward declaring the month based solely on conjunction (Ref: hakirah.org/vol20Ajdler.pdf), a paradigm the Prophet pbuh would have been familiar with, yet explicitly rejected in favor of observation. As a physicist, I find this departure from empirical observation tragic. As a Real Madrid fan, I want to inform the rest of football fans about what media won't tell you & only what in our fan bubble we learn by supporting Vini. At 18, Vini was subjected to racism that was partnered by players, officials, fans & media in Spain. He was wrestled down & his head bitten in front of ref 2m away, he gets a yellow & not that ATM player. Until Vini bloomed, Vini was getting racism on par or bit more than Rodrygo & other Spanish black players. In 21/22, everything changed against Mallorca away where fans chanted ape chants towards Vini & Rodrygo. To please such fans, Railo went full speed on Rodrygo's ankles forcing him to be carried off injured, Maffeo aimed for Vini's knee while Vini was jumping to avoid the tackle, he scraped Vini's knee & Vini gets a yellow with no red on Maffeo. Vini scores, dances & Maffeo labeled Vini as a provocateur. Spanish media, used this narrative & gave a shit player national attention to spin this provocateur story until Vini was called a dancing monkey live on tv. This label, narrative & spin gave racists a shield to act without restraint. Every away stadium, he'd get racist chants. There was racist dolls hanged of Vini off bridges near stadiums as a message for everyone to see but especially players driving around there to see. The situation turned worse when it was vs Atletico away. Media did stories, special interviews from Koke who threatened that there will be trouble if Vini dances at their stadium, this incited the fans. Thousands before the game outside the stadium gathered with a racist doll of Vini being hanged & chanted racist stuff. In the stadium, there was thousands chanting monkey, nearly whole stadium. Rodrygo scores a banger & calls Vini to dance with him as a message against the racists. After that, nearly every stadium but another turning point was Valencia away. Before the game started, they were saying "mono" in hundreds at the Real Madrid bus before game started. Thousands chanted mono in the stadium. Vini was emotional, he told the refs & pointed to people who chanted. The ref convinced Vini to play on & that he will protect him. Yet, in same game... Vini gets sent off, players to please the fans as usual tried "dark arts" to rile up Vini. There was arguments when 1 guy puts Vini in a chokehold from behind & Vini fights back to get out of it. VAR edited out Vini being choked & showed only Vini fighting back, Vini gets a red & goes off crying cause he was not protected but it was a coordinate hate hunt from fans, media, officials & those running Spanish football. Since then, he gets racist chants with thousands Spanish fans, even if he doesn't play them & even if he was playing in Europe at that time. Even 3rd/2nd division team, the fans before the game started... a place Vini never stepped into, this January there was hundreds chanting monkey for no reason. He gets booed before games even start at every stadium cause he called out racism. Valencia had floods, people lost their lives but Vini, Real Madrid players & club donated to help those in Valencia. Vini still got hate, abuse & even got an unfair red card after VAR again edited things out to make Vini look the only 1 at fault. People say Vini is annoying but if you'd suffer so much racism, would you still be emotionally stable & healthy? I can see Vini is slowly losing the love for football because of the racism. I hope people are informed about the truth, what media doesn't tell you & what the algorithm won't show if you are not following Vini & Real Madrid. Even Real Madrid Spanish fans are pretending to not see, quite a lot of them are mad at him calling out racism.

They are not lying; they simply moved from one valid interpretation of Shahada (physical) to another valid interpretation (astronomical presence). I will explain, because you requested it. To an outsider or a scientist, it looks like a lie. However, from a theological and administrative perspective, it is a matter of jurisprudence (Fiqh) and the definition of what constitutes the witnessing of a crescent. The core of the misunderstanding lies in the Quranic verse: “So whoever among you witnesses/sights (shahida) the month, he should fast it” (2:185). In linguistic and legal terms, the word shuhud (witnessing/sighting) is an example of دلالة ظنيّة (Speculative/Non-Definitive Indication), i.e: the word "witness/sight" in the verse is open to multiple interpretations based on ijtihad. For this reason, Scholars have historically applied three different interpretations to what it means to "witness/sight" the crescent: 1- Shahada of the Eye: This is the physical sighting of the crescent (whether with naked eyes or advanced optical aid) 2- Shahada of Presence: This argues that if you are present in your city (not traveling) when the month begins, you must fast. 3- Shahada of Taqdir (calculation/estimation): This supports using the birth of the new moon (conjunction) as the witness. Saudi Arabia uses the Umm al-Qura calendar for its daily administrative life. This calendar is not based on "will it be seen?" but rather "has the new moon been born and is it present in the sky?" When the official moon-sighting committees go out and the sky is cloudy or the moon is too low to be seen, the authorities often default to the Umm al-Qura calculation to maintain national consistency. In their view, if the moon is astronomically present (the birth has occurred), the condition for the new month has been met; applying the Shahada of Taqdir. The Umm al-Qura criteria considers the month to have begun if the moon sets after the sun at the coordinates of Mecca, even if only by a few seconds. In such cases, the moon has been witnessed technically, even if it is invisible to the eyes/binoculars. The data for today (February 17, 2026) in Mecca demonstrates exactly how this technical sighting works: - Conjunction (Birth of the Moon): 3:01 PM (Mecca Time). - Sunset: 5:52 PM in Tumair. - Moonset: 5:54 PM in Tumair. - The "Lag Time": 2 minutes. To an astronomer, these 2 minutes are irrelevant because the moon’s illumination is too low (less than 1%) to be seen. However, to the Saudi Supreme Court, the condition of presence has been met. Since the moon remained above the horizon for two minutes after the sun disappeared, it is "witnessed" or "sighted" by calculation (Taqdir). Thank You. - Ahmadulbadawy AbdulRaheem. #Ramadan2026 #RamadanKareem

Can someone explain to me why is Saudi Arabia always lying on the date of the beginning of Ramadan ? Is that part of some agenda ? Do they even know the fact that the crescent cannot be sighted today is public information ?
